Looks like the RFA market for superstars has been reset. Kaprizov, Carlsson, and now Celebrini are all up around 16-17% of the cap. McDavid was 15.7% back in 2018-19, Matthews and Marner in the 13-14% range, and pretty much everyone else slotted below that.

No, he'll have played 8 seasons when this deal expires. UFA status is achieved after 7 seasons or age 27 (unless that changed with the new CBA, but I don't think it did).

I don't think any top picks will be signing the old "bridge deal" of past years where it's under 4 years and they're still an RFA. Matthews was one of the first to go this way on their 2nd contract and the rest of the top guys are finally catching on.

Not disagreeing here, just wanted to note that Matthews was the first to do it after McDavid (idiot) and Eichel bucked the earlier trend from the beginning of the Cap era where premium 1OA centres walked right to UFA on deal 2.

Sidney Crosby signed 5 x 8.7M AAV (15.34% of the Cap) coming out of his ELC in an era with basically no term limits. He has the same agent as Celebrini in Pat Brisson.
Steven Stamkos signed 5 x 7.5M AAV (11.66%)
John Tavares signed 5 x 5.5M AAV (9.17%) : another Brisson client

Nathan MacKinnon signed 7 x 6.3M AAV (8.63%) which he later came to regret somewhat, but COL celebrated and used to win a Cup with as it was a huge weapon in the flat cap era. MacKinnon had a slower start than some other 1st overall picks though.
Ovechkin (not a centre, but kind of important) also went long term (13 years x 9.45M AAV 16.82%) but his number was sky high relative to the field.
