Armchair GM Thread 2026/27

Tbay apparently had $10M set aside for Cartson (until he got traded to Carolina .. and the Canes are apparently still discussing a potential deal). TBay had apparently something figured out capwise to be able to afford Werenski’s $9.5M cap hit.

So, the key question seems to be what assets are TBay willing to part with and are they enough for Columbus?
Leafs and other suitors only become favored in this situation if TBay can't find enough asset value to part with to satisfy Columbus or justify it if the report is accurate because Werenski holds the winning hand.

I’ll bet the Leafs will need to get another team involved if they want to make this happen. Maybe Buffalo?

Werenski apparently vetoed a trade to Dallas. Toronto and Tampa are his preferred destinations. What does Tampa have to offer versus what the Leafs have to offer? I gotta think Knies is the most appealing piece here. Is that just blue and white goggle talk?

First offer, and then let them feel like it’s a win when Knies is switched in to take it across the finish line. But also, what does Dreger truly know if Darren Ferris is not involved?

Cowan, Danford and a future 1st is okay with me too. Hate to lose them, but they’re buddies and would do well with more minutes.

If it’s Luke Haymes instead, Chayka gets a statue immediately.

Does AA or Hildeby have some trade value?

AA more valuable to the Leafs at this stage in my opinion (Stolarz, potential Bob combo is imposing when clicking but usually it’s their knee-bones clacking).

Hildeby would be a sweetener type of asset like 1.5 steps up from a 2nd rder.
