Zach Hyman

My severe doubts about the plan to rid ourselves of Hyman has already  started to rear it?s ugly head. Not only do the Oilers look much better with his presence and drive on their team , ours has looked worse without.  :-X :'(

I watched some of the Oilers game last night and I agree that Edmonton looks a lot better. They look like they have the depth they need and secondary scoring to boot. That said, it was against Phoenix so...?

And the "plan" to rid ourselves of Hyman was just the reality of the salary cap.

Well. No matter how you phrase it, a ?plan? was made to allocate funds in the places best determined for success . So the plan may not have directly been laid out to rid the team of Hyman, there certainly was a plan that resulted in that outcome.

Sure but within that context just saying the Leafs are worse without Hyman is largely meaningless because, obviously, when cap constraints force a team to lose a good player, they'll get worse. You need to make the case that the team would be better with Hyman but without the players they would need to lose to make up the cap difference for. But even then, you also have to make the case that signing Hyman at the cap hit the Oilers gave him wasn't just a net positive but that signing him to 7 years at that price would be a wise decision.

We all liked Zach and would have loved to have kept him around but I don't think you can argue with the point that he just priced himself out of Toronto.

I love me some AM34 but the gap between McDavid and the #2 player in the league, whoever that is, right now is probably bigger than the 1-2 gap in any other sport and by a fair margin.

Yep and Papi will make someone else better, remember Hyman didn't start the year with AM, Jumbo did

Nitpicking but this should be in ex Leaf news...and for the record I wish him well in Edm but really don't care how well he does or doesn't do there.

What are you talking about? Plan to rid ourselves of hyman?

And besides that, even if the leafs had the cap space, 5mil+ for 7 years or hyman is nuts. All the power to him but that?s not a contract I?d want to be saddled with.

Going to have to agree with Nik. Also AM is mostly a shooter. Doesn't get anywhere near the assists McDavid does and just not in the same class. I didn't like seeing Hyman go but I wouldn't pay him what he got. Good player, good work ethics but in my opinion stone hands who scores a lot of empty net goals which will probably decline because Oliers send McDavid out in those situations to boost stats.

I know it?s an old thread but I think it?s worth mentioning. Hyman has 25 goals in his first 40 playoff games with Edmonton.  That is second only to Gretzky who scored 30 goals in his first 40 games. I?m typing this comment while there?s still a period left for Hyman in this 40th game.
