Utah Mammoth

Said it when the names were all first talked about, this absolutely should have been Mammoths. Imagine the San Jose Shark, or the Anaheim Duck.

But alas it's still a solid choice, especially after Yeti was taken off the table.

It's basically just the Predators logo too. That could at least be funny if they build up a bit of a rivalry as they're in the same division.

Not sure why they didn't take my suggestion:

The marketers must have some fun trying to come up with the pretentious twaddle they put out with stuff like this. Go read the stuff about the fonts and the colours and all.

Yes, and they will tell you how important it is that you have consistency in every single piece of material, because if you don't then nobody will know who you are! Then they charge $1000 per hour to scrutinize and approve any communication.

As a marketer, I take issue with this characterization. Consistent brand identity is important, so that you come across as a well-run, professional organization.

I get the consistency thing and most of the marketing things like having nice gear.

But

"Rock Black" The darkness of night in the mountains and the volcanic rock of Utah's deserts
"Mountain Blue" Utah's rich winter sports history and its clear skies for more than 230 days a year
"Salt White" The snow on Utah's peaks and the famous Salt Flats

Or the "Mammoth Sans" font. Our new Custom type is frosty and strong in regular and italic. It features angled crossbars on A and H as a nod to the inaugural season lettering, continuing to evoke the elevation of Mountain Hockey and our unrelenting pursuit of excllence.

The Utah Tusk mark underscores the team's identity and unwavering pride in the state and includes the word "UTAH" with the Mammoth tusk embedded into the "U".

What a load of pretentious twaddle. That's justifying your fee and nothing else.

We'd believe it and respect it more if you just said "we thought it all looked cool."

Oh, yeah, that's totally fair. It's something teams need to put together as part of the package to sell the concepts to their clients, but it's a lot of BS. It's just to get buy-in. It's actually more about stroking the ego of the client by trying to show off how much time and thought was put into it, how the marketing team thinks the product is as cool and unique and special as the client does, etc. But, none of it is real.

My team here in Belfast had a rebrand a few years back with new logo etc.

My two favourite bits were them using “Causeway black” on the shirts cos it evoked the world famous Giants Causeway. Which is, of course, grey.

It also looks very similar to Utah’s “rock black” if you look closely! 😃

The other bit was that the curved line under the word “Belfast” in the new logo referenced the curve of the roof of the Arena. I’ve followed the team for 25 years since their inception and remember the arena being built and there was never any mention of the curve of the roof of the arena being a thing 😂

It just does amuse me.

I do appreciate a lot of marketing in terms of the social media type content and all that a lot of teams are putting out. This stuff just make me cringe a little

The font names are silly but paying attention to every detail of the typography is not. (Just look at amateur attempts to make signage, for example.) All of this is best practice in branding. The question is, it done well or not?

If you don't believe me, do a case study of Apple. Their design thoroughness is legendary.

Apple is the platinum standard. Very few even approach their design.

My “issue”‘ isnt with quality design.

It’s with making up silly bumpf to try and justify their work instead of just saying what you said 😃
