No details yet other than not Dawson Mercer and there is salary retention

More importantly, he is not going to Tampa or Boston.

Leafs legend also in the mix

With Johnsson in the AHL I wondered about him coming back here in the offseason as a bit of a reclamation project. This move will probably allow him to show if he's still a NHLer (which I think he probably is).

Looks like a good haul for SJ...depends on that conditional. Some decent prospects but not their top guys..

For some context, Mukhamadullin (#68) was ranked just behind Knies (#59) on the Athletic's list of top players/prospects under the age of 23 recently. So roughly comparable prospects. Not sure what the conditions are on that 2024 pick but if San Jose gets a second 1st rounder in the deal it's a pretty solid haul. New Jersey of course also does well though by not giving up a better prospect like Alexander Holtz.

The conditions on the draft picks are as follows:

San Jose Receives New Jersey's 2023 First-Round Pick: If the pick is a top-two selection, New Jersey will instead transfer their own 2024 first-round pick.

San Jose Receives Conditional 2024 Second-Round Pick: Should New Jersey reach the 2023 Eastern Conference Finals (and Meier plays in at least 50% of Meier's Club's Playoff games in 2023) or the 2024 Eastern Conference Finals, New Jersey will transfer its own first-round pick in 2024 NHL Draft to San Jose (top 10 protected), instead of its own second-round pick in 2024 NHL Draft. If New Jersey's first-round pick in 2024 NHL Draft is a top 10 selection, New Jersey will have the option to instead transfer its own first-round pick in 2025 NHL Draft to San Jose. Should New Jersey transfer its first-round pick in 2024 NHL Draft per the original condition (top-two above in Condition A), New Jersey will instead transfer its own first-round pick in 2025 NHL Draft should they reach the 2024 Eastern Conference Finals.

Did... did New Jersey really lottery protect their 1st rounder this year?

The New Jersey Devils today acquired forwards Timo Meier, Timur Ibragimov, defensemen Scott Harrington, Santeri Hatakka, goaltender Zachary Emond and a fifth-round pick (originally Colorado's selection) in the 2024 NHL Draft via trade with the San Jose Sharks in exchange for New Jersey's first-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft (conditional), defensemen Shakir Mukhamadullin and Nikita Okhotiuk, forwards Andreas Johnsson and Fabian Zetterlund, a conditional second-round selection in the 2024 NHL Draft and a seventh-round selection in 2024. San Jose will retain 50% of Meier's 2022-23 salary as part of the trade.

Lot of parts moving in this one.

That's a big deal...13 pieces total. Don't know enough about the prospects involved. I know a couple from NJ are good, not grade A guys but I guess with the 2 1sts, you're not getting their top prospects.

It's funny that they did it but only for the top 2. Like, if they collapsed so utterly and totally that they missed the playoffs but only had to give up the #3 pick this year...well, that'd be ok.

I read the pick is conditional on NJ re-signing Meier, but nothing confirmed there.

Conditions based on a player re-singing are not allowed as of the 2020 CBA extension.

Here is the condition:

Ok, honest question, did the Devils acquire Meier for less than the Lightning paid for Jeannot?

I'd take NJ's 2023 1st rounder (very strong draft), potentially NJ's 2024 1st rounder (think there's a decent chance one of those conditions get met), and Shakir Mukhamadullin over TB's 2025 1st rounder. So San Jose gets the 3 most valuable futures in the two trades, which gives them the edge there for me. Even if the conditions for NJ's second 1st rounder don't hit I still lean SJ since the 2023 1st rounder and Mukhamadullin are more valuable than a 2025 1st rounder.

Somewhat on topic, I feel like the reaction to the Meier return has been underwhelming on social media because people are saying San Jose didn't get one of New Jersey's best prospects. But I mean NJ's top prospects are pretty darn stacked/untouchable. Mukhamadullin would be a top 2 or 3 prospect on most teams.

Mukhamadullin is a very good prospect.

This kind of feels like one of those "both teams won" kind of trades.

San Jose got a really solid return for Meier but New Jersey got the best player AND didn't have to give up their best prospect(s)
