Steven Stamkos has agreed to terms on a five-year contract with the #TBLightning.

Sorry, don't have the dough at this point.

edit: 7.5 X 5 per capgeek.

Well, another dream player locked up for many years.  Who's next?

First was Rick Nash, then Bobby Ryan, now Stamkos.... Next will be Ryan Getzlaf I am sure of that.

He only has 2 years remaining on his deal before becoming a UFA and he is exactly the type of player we need, and Burke likes.

Anyways, good deal for both Stammer and Tampa.  Nice that it wasn't a 10+ year deal for once.

Tweet from Gino Reda of TSN says 37.5 M
Year 1: 4 + 4M signing bonus
Year 2: 5 + 3M signing bonus
Year 3: 8M
Year 4: 8M
Year 5: 5.5M

Of all of them, Getzlaf might be the most realistic. He has connections to Burke, he's exactly what the team needs (and will still probably need 2 years from now), his current team looks like they might be on the downswing, he's not their marquee player (in fact, he's probably their 3rd most important guy from a PR perspective) and so on. Not that really expect him to end up a Leaf, but, I do think he's a more realistic possibility than any of the others brought up over the past few years.

I think there is a good chance he'll be a leaf after that deal is done. I know a lot of people say that Toronto players like to come home, but with him, I actually think it's true.

What the heck was the holdup with that deal? Was Stamkos hopng for an offer sheet from the Leafs or something?

I'd imagine it's roughly the same situation with Schenn. There's no rush so front offices can have a vacation/deal with other matters first.

Seems like a pretty good deal for Tampa.

I can hardly wait for the uproar that will happen here in five years. :)

Strange that he accepted the dip in salary in his 5th year. Yzerman seemed to really play hardball here in these negotiations. That could bite him in the butt if Stamkos walks when he gets the chance.

Sweet! Only a 5 year.  Is he UFA or RFA after that?

UFA I believe.

edit: He'll be 26/27... In his prime!

7 NHL seasons = UFA status unless the CBA changes in the next deal (which I doubt it will substantially with this clause)

A lot of fuss over a result that was fairly close to expectations. The only discussion issue is whether they wanted to sign him to a deal like Philly did with Carter/Richards and couldn't get it.

I dont think it was Stevie Y at all... I bet he wanted Stamkos even longer, to lock up 1 or 2 of those UFA years

In five years, he'll have so many concussions it won't matter.
No goons, no respect, no star players.

There are lots of star players in the NHL that have never had a concussion. Iginla, OV, St Louis etc.

I might be convinced that this is indeed the case.

You know who isn't among that list?  Stamkos.
