I don't know anything about baseball, but didn't the MLB trade deadline happen the week the Jays got Price, etc? How can they add more guys now?

The July 31st trade deadline is the non-waiver deadline. Anyone moved after July 31st is subject to waivers. So basically it's for adding small, emergency pieces.

Baseball has two separate deadlines.
July 31st is the regular trade deadline. August 31st in the waiver-trade deadline. Trades in August require a player to go on waivers before you can trade them so it is sometimes harder to make a trade because any team below you can make a claim and nullify a potential trade.

Imagine if the NHL treated the referees with the same reverence. There wouldn't be a single player left on the bench. For some reason umpires are completely infallible and MLB defends them to no end. I don't get it.

But they don't claim that they're infallible. They've brought in replay. The one thing they don't let you argue is balls and strikes and with good reason because if they did then every single hitter would argue balls and strikes.
So why do it? What good comes out of telling an umpire that you don't like his strike zone? The Ump today knew what Gibbons wanted to talk to him about. It's the one bell you don't ring.
