Sam Carrick signs a one year deal

Sam Carrick is going to be the 4th line Centre this year, bet on it.

I really like the idea of a sports book somewhere that would lay odds on a marginal AHL player making a lousy NHL team's 4th line. If you do find such an establishment, probably best to avoid the Steak and Prime Rib buffet.

No one is suggesting the Leafs are Stanley Cup team just because Babs is our coach, but Carrick has exceeded at every level he has ever played at, he just turned 23 and exactly the fiesty energy player that the Leafs need on the 4th line. Not flatfeet plodders like Orr and McLaren.  Not saying much but is an upgrade over the past few years.

You know Orr and McLaren didn't play last year, right?

Before the Winnik/Santorelli trades the Leafs most common 4th line was Booth-Smith-Panik. Guys like Holland and Kozun also saw a fair bit of time on the 4th line. Carrick's style of player is closer to Orr and McLaren than it is to those players.

He's exceeded what, exactly? He's been pretty much what he was expected to be when he was drafted - a potential 4th line depth type guy. So, he hasn't exceeded expectations. He hasn't produced at a prolific level or anything. He's been basically what the Leafs always felt he could be.

Every team in the NHL has a line with players like Carrick. He signed a cheap deal, to play 10 -12 mins a game.

Again I am not saying he is the second coming, but he does play hard every shift and that is what we are looking for (at least at this point).
If you saw the Marlies playoff game when they were shorthanded on a 5-3 for 2 full minutes, it was basically Carrick who shut them down. If he becomes a PK specialist then so be it.
God you guys are a rough bunch!

One thing that people have already mentioned though is that there's no reason to get AHLers who try hard to play on the team when you can find NHLers who try hard every August for basically the same price. It especially wouldn't make any sense when you'd potentially be able trade away those NHLers later in the season and get a late pick back.

I really don't think it's overly negative to point out who was actually on the 4th line last year.

No, we're just realistic. It's great that Carrick played well in the AHL, but that's against a lower tier of player than he'd face with the Leafs. Those abilities are not necessarily transferable. It's great that he works hard, but just working hard doesn't help. You need to have the necessary skill level to turn that effort into results, and, quite frankly, I'm not convinced Carrick does. He didn't look like much more than an injury fill-in type when he was up with the team this past season. I mean, if he makes the Leafs as the 4th line centre, that's great. It means the Leafs are going to be in the running for the 1st overall pick.

All we're really saying is cut down the hyperbole. Carrick is a run of the mill, 4th line depth type. He's organizational filler. He hasn't exceeded anything. He is exactly what he was always expected to be.

The Leafs' first signing under Babcock's apparent advisement should tell us something about how this grand rebuild is going to take shape...give pause...this is very exciting.

Have they scheduled a presser?  I have questions.

I'd like to know if he's going to take a historically significant number, or if he plans on establishing his own history with a new, and until today, relatively unheralded one?

"Stop the bullying 2015."

2015 is the year we stop all the bullying Nik.
Joking around, we are still awaiting the verdict on "the people V Nik Bullying in the 1st degree"

Nothing gives a harder wedgie than the truth.

While we are on the topic of how much potential Sam Carrick and Matt Frattin have; Kaberle for #1 centre?
