Quinn Hughes traded to Minnesota

My guess is all these big guys in the next two years (McDavid, Makar, Hughes) settle in at or just around $20mil. Nice round number that will represent the new ceiling for a number of years to follow. Whether Matthews gets himself back into that tier obviously remains to be seen.

If Matthews returns to form (45+ G), where is his number going?

I remember positing, prior to Matthews' extension at 13.25, that he'd go short term on contract three and bump it up to a long term 16M AAV x 8 deal to close out his career with some certainty. Landscape has changed quite a bit, to the point where I don't think he will go long term on the next one either (8yrs off the table now) since the $$ is high enough so that he can maintain flexibility for a Cup-chase but also give the team room to build around him. Provided he does not suck again.

I was going to say: I would be very concerned about injuries piling up if I were him - he doesn't want to turn into Mike Bossy or Wendel but without maximizing pay. I think I'd probably just lock in and take as many years as I could get.
