Mat Barzal extended 8 years 9.15M AAV

Barzal's such a confusing player. I don't doubt that he's insanely talented and hasn't exactly had a great supporting cast with the Islanders since Tavares left but at the end of the day he's averaged 66 points / 82 games over his past 4 seasons.

I really don't know where that puts his true value but the Islanders had to get him signed regardless I guess.

Really banking on him regaining some of that rookie season production. Otherwise, a lot of coin for a 20 goal, 60 point forward.

But, the real question is, how does this show how overpaid Nylander is?

Barzal had all the leverage given they needed to avoid the Tavares comparison all season long, and every other forward on the roster is 40 years old.

He would have been an RFA, so, no Tavares comparisons.

Oh...well then, it's just Lou is crazy then.

ELC (2-year slide) --> 3 years x 7M AAV --> 8 years x 9.15M AAV
coasting on 85 pts in 82 gp when sheltered by Tavares. Since then... bordering on playing like a Kerfoot+10pts.

Good for Lou to get this locked in before the cap jumps, but this is a healthy overpay for the production similar to Arizona's long-term deals for middling players that are just relatively good on trash teams.
Good for Mat to get guaranteed money, but why would he want to lock in with NYI for the rest of his prime where he will never be able to produce to his potential?
