Marlies Talk 15/16 - Is Sheldon worth Keefe'n around?

So it seems Dzierkals, the Leafs 3rd round pick is refusing to go to the Q over $. I believe the AHL is an option for him since he was drafted out of Europe.

If the Leafs are tight on contract space, can they give him and AHL only deal and maintain his rights?

There really isn't any money to speak of in playing in the Q ($150 a week or something), so I'm not sure why this is an issue all of a sudden.

Sounds like maybe the kid doesn't want to play for free at all.  Seems a little odd for a late draft pick who hasn't really accomplished anything yet to be not playing in a development league over $.  I can't imagine he was making much of anything in the junior leagues he playing in last year.

Unless he's in a situation where him or his family could really use the money he might make in the AHL or Europe, in which case it doesn't seem odd at all.

In the European leagues, they get paid closer to a professional salary than an allowance. Even if it's only like $50K or so, that's a significant improvement on the what the Q offers.

Import players aren't paid like regular CHL players are. I don't know the exact rules surrounding it, but some have reportedly made 6 figures. So there's definitely some room for negotiating here, and that's probably all that's happening.

Really?  Like Dzeirkals is sitting beside Marner in the dressing room, and Dzeirkals is making $100K and Marner is making $150 a week?

You know what, I think that I mixed up salaries with what some teams have to pay a players Euro club to secure their release. Move along folks!

Looks like the crowded crease at Ricoh just cleared up with Gibson being part of the Grabner trade. I guess Bibeau and Sparks will be the Marlies tandem now.

For those who care, Andrew Campbell was named Marlies captain. Matt Frattin and Rich Clune will wear the A for home games. Sam Carrick and TJ Brennan will wear the A on the road.

Speaking of Clune, how interesting does this signing look now in light of the Westhead article on cocaine use in the league?

Taking this from the waivers thread in the main board:

There has to be a trade, no?

I can't see any of those guys being happy as 4th liners on the Marlies.

That's 9 guys too, so one of them could be sitting. I think Bailey may have played centre in the NCAA though, so it might make sense to have him in the middle. Maybe something like:

Panik-Nylander-Brown
Soshnikov-Froese-Frattin
Leipsic-Bailey-Kapanen
Leivo-Gauthier-Hyman

Then again with Clune wearing an A you'd think he'd be in the line-up somewhere. Sam Carrick too. Ryan Rupert is the only other forward on a NHL deal with the Marlies.

Based on what they've said previously, I think Gauthier might start as 1C for Orlando, there isn't a great deal of benefit to having him play 10 minutes a night in the AHL.

Also, a guy like Leivo, he isn't a fourth liner in the AHL either, something has got to give.

Also, if we can agree that Frattin isn't likely to get an NHL look, I'd rather he not take playing time from a young guy, but they've given him an A so he is likely sticking around.

I'm hoping for another Grabner-esque trade (Carrick, Leivo, Frattin are prime candidates).

I was thinking:
Kapanen-Nylander-Brown
Leipsic-Froese-Panik
Soshnikov-Carrick-Frattin
Clune/Leivo-Gauthier-Hyman/Bailey

They're also the prime candidates to fill in for guys who are have minor injuries or are traded mid-season. I doubt we see a trade, but rather a few potential Marlies ending up in Orlando.

Lines for tonight's opener:

Clune Nylander Brown
Panik Froese Hyman
Soshnikov Gauthier Frattin
Leipsic Carrick Leivo

Percy Brennan
Valiev Campbell
Loov Holl

Bibeau.

Kapanen is apparently sick and that's why he's out. But apologies to whoever I called nuts for suggesting that Clune might play on the Marlies top line with Nylander.

I don't get it.  Why is an anchor getting 1st line minutes.  While you certainly want to have some protection in your lineup, I don't think it actually should play on the top line....ever.

Haha, no problem! I didn't think they'd do it!
