Marcus Stroman has officially been cleared to throw off the mound.  If Stroman is able to throw a few innings for the Jays this year this team is incredibly deep.  I'm not sure if he can get ready enough to replace Hutchinson for a start or two at the end of the year but if Stroman is game-ready he's got the pitching repertoire to slot behind Price as our 2nd best pitcher.

He might just be on track to get a start or two in before the end of the season, which means, if the Jays make the post season . . .

Great news on Stroman!
I'm not so sure he returns as a starter this year though. Everything out there in the media coming from the Jays has talked about having him in the pen, probably not enough time left to get him stretched out? If we can get him back as the long man in the pen down the stretch though and into the playoffs that would be fantastic!

Also don't rule out AA pulling off an August trade for a starter. There were a few teams (Padres come to mind) who didn't deal in July that are completely out of it now with a bunch of arms available.

its August 12, he is cleared to throw, the kid is what 24 and looks like he is a super fast healer.  He could get in a couple of Buffalo games by the end of the month and be with the Jays in September. Why not?

Thing is, I'm not sure Stroman adds a ton of value to the club if you bring him back in the bullpen. With Lowe, Hawkins, Sanchez and Osuna the team's pretty deep on right-handers out of the pen. Bumping those guys down a slot would save, maybe, a handful of runs. Hutchinson is the team's real weakpoint(and I think Buehrle and Estrada are going to regress a little) so unless Stroman is replacing him I really question if rushing him back onto the team outweighs the value of getting him 100% for next year.

If he's part of the September call ups that means he isn't eligible for the playoffs right?

I'm pretty sure there are different rules for guys coming off the DL.

You're right, because he's on the dl he qualifies for the playoff roster.

Wouldn't they still have to clear a roster spot for him though?

Yeah, but that's pretty easy to do if it comes down to it. If teams usually have a player or two on the 40 man roster than can be removed without risk of losing them (or much sleep being lost over losing them). In September, that's the only roster that's an issue.

Technically, anyone brought up in September is eligible for the playoffs. As long as a player is in the organizations before September 1st, they can play for the team in the playoffs - as long as they're replacing an injured player.

And there have been shenanigans with this rule in the past.  Oh look, Aaron Loup is "hurt", better add Marcus Stroman.  Regardless, Stroman likely gets added back on to the roster on September 1st regardless of his readiness to pitch because it's a nice team morale thing and it's good for his own recovery to get back in the dugout.

In some ways I agree with Nik, but again the guy is 24 not 19, what are we going to keep him in a cocoon till he  is so growing grey hair?  If he has been cleared to the mound means his knee is fine, his upper body was not injured so all he needs to do is get his throwing stamina back and I bet this kids been doing the upper body work  all along.  I guess we can play a wait see, we still have 21 days to September and that is a lot of rehab and some game time in Buffalo.  The Jays will figure it out best what to do with him then.  Hopefully he is not forced back sooner by necessity.

Even if he only pitches a handful of innings out of the bullpen (even in a blowout) it might just be a moral victory for him to be pumped for the start of next year.  I think we might honestly get him to replace Hutchison's last few starts at this point though and that's just fantastic because he could potentially slot ahead of Buehrle and Estrada giving the Jays that 2nd/3rd guy who can be lethal in a playoff series.

It would make for a very interesting situation. With the years Buerhle and Estrada are having, and the way Dickey has been pitching of late . . . adding a healthy Stroman gives the Jays a lot of potential quality starting options if they make the postseason. It would no longer be crystal clear who the starter to be removed from the rotation would be, assuming they go with the typical 4 man playoff staff.

I still think you err on the side of caution and only bring him back if, at the very least, you're confident in using him in high leverage situations. I appreciate getting him "pumped" but I really don't think that outweighs the negatives, especially when if you are bringing him back before you're 100% confident in him there is probably a pretty good risk he gets knocked around.

Remember, he's not coming back from an arm injury. This is all about rust.

This is a really good read and especially interesting reading about the technology that was used to help him rehab: http://grantland.com/the-triangle/2015-mlb-toronto-blue-jays-marcus-stroman-acl-recovery/
