Don't get me wrong, that was a hilariously bad trade but Santorelli is not equivalent to Martin Erat.  Erat has 536 career points.  Santorelli has 113.  I'm sure we might pull a 2nd round pick or one of those 3rd + 5th kind of trades but we aren't getting a top prospect or 1st round pick for him.  Not even from McPhee.

In a draft like this one, yeah.  Sure, some of these guys aren't going to amount to anything but there are a handful of guys who are going to be drafting late in the 1st round who would be lottery picks last year.  That only helps the 2nd round by pushing some talented guys back...and a lot of guys who might be overlooked because of their comparables.

And as Anthony Petrielli mentioned in his Leafs Notebook, maybe this is a draft the Leafs can try to take advantage of OHL players with a couple guys in management (Dubas and Hunter) who would have in depth knowledge of the league and a good portion of the players still eligible.

My thought process was even simpler: you won't find one of those lucky gems if you simply don't have the picks. Unless there's real possibility of moving up to the top 10-15, just stockpile as many top-60 picks as you can.

If a team had any doubts about their bottom-6 that would instantly solve it. And their cap hits are low enough that it wouldn't be tough to fit them in. I could see a Vancouver or Pittsburgh being very interested in that.

Maybe. But would that substantially improve what the Leafs got as opposed to dealing them separately? Pittsburgh already traded their first and it seems unlikely that Vancouver would deal theirs.

I'd be eyeing a 1st rounder if those two were packaged. Thought Pittsburgh would be the ideal trading partner but didn't realize that they traded their pick. Vancouver might not want to move their's just because even with those two they're risking a lot just to probably get eliminated in the 2nd round.

I suppose it'd be tough to find a match, you want a team that can legitimately win the Cup but most of those don't need two good 3rd liners.

Exactly.  This is how good teams parlay shrewd but non-essential signings into extra picks that become the basis for the future.

Erat also had an additional two years left on his contract at the time of the deal, he wasn't a rental.
