Leafs claim Panik from TBay

Hey whats wrong with the odd nickname, ads a bit of colour to life so to speak and perhaps I hope a little bit of fun.  And its usually the fringe players or bad players that get the monikers attached more frequently now.  Like Molten Orr or Freezer Mclaren and we won't be using those to much in the future. 
In the old days the best players had nicknames like Joe "The Sultan of Swat" Dimaggio or Wayne "The Great One" Gretsky.
And don't tell me that Carter didnt look like that kid from Home Alone when he first got here.
 
perhaps the Sultan of Swat or Swing was Babe Ruth?hit his first professional home run in Toronto, May 5, 1914 in the ballbark at Hanlan's Point.. a lot of Yanks do not know that.
 
The thing about those "great" nicknames is that they either were a natural fit for a player's name, number, etc - Sid the Kid, Super Mario, etc. - or they were a genuine reflection of that player's abilities/stature - The Great One, Rocket Richard, etc. They're never about insulting the player or about vague physical resemblances that only some people see, and they never feel forced.

And, for the record, DiMaggio was known as either "Joltin' Joe" or "The Yankee Clipper."

Minor league baseball is professional baseball. Ruth wouldn't have hit a major league homerun in Toronto as Toronto didn't have a major league team. Even still, I don't know where Gretzky or Sundin or Orr scored their first NHL goals. It's statistical ephemera except, in Ruth's case, it was 100 years ago.
 
I am underwhelmed with Panik.  I would like to see Winnik on the 4th line LW.  C'mon Booth, get well and play on the 2nd line while outscoring Mason Raymond by season's end!
 
I agree Panik doesnt look good at all, Frattin had a decent shift in the last game, I would like to see him get a touch more time.

One decent shift out of ten is not good odds, I would not be surprised if Ashton is in over him this evening
 
I think Ashton brings a good amount of controlled agression into the game.  With Frattin having one decent shift I was comparing him to Panik who has been a disaster since he stepped onto the ice.  Looks like both Frattin and Ashton may play between Holland tonight.
 
I though Panik's first game was a good one. He and Holland didn't look very good when Kessel was on their line in the last game though.
 
I guess that I feel that Panik is not being put in the right position to succeed by Carlyle.  Although I don't like Ashton that much, I think that Ashton is a better fit for a crash and bang energy guy that gets his nose broken every fight.  Personally I would prefer Stamkos old wingman from the OHL, NYI Matt Martin, to play the Leafs 4th line LW.
 
I'm really not sure how anyone can make an accurate analysis on Toronto's 4th line players. Holland played 6 minutes last game; Panik 4. Against Colorado both played under 5. The only time any of these guys actually get decent playing time (Holland played 11 mins againt Detroit at Toronto) it's during a game that Toronto is getting blown out of; hardly an easy situation to show what one's got.

You can put Tavares, Crosby and Toews on the 4th line for 5 minutes a game and there is a good chance that some (or all) of them might not impress.
