Leafs acquire the rights to Chris Tanev [signed 6 years, $4.5mil AAV]

Would not at all be shocked if the Leafs try to go long-term with Tanev here to bring the AAV down, with the expectation/hope he'll be LTIR'tiring in the later years.

I see it going that way as well. Rielly is finally getting a potential partner. Now sign Roy next lol.

I mean I want him so if this helps us sign him...great.  Hopefully they can get a deal done before July 1st so they can prioritize other moves later

Even if they didn't sign him, it helps to clarify what they'll need to do July 1

Tanev had a modified NTC so presumably Toronto is an acceptable destination (given he was born in Toronto)

If they can sign him, they're just in the hunt for one more top 4 dman. It helps their focus as 2/3rds of the league will be going after the handful that get to July 1 unsigned and they'll have a better handle on their available cap dollars.

If it keeps the AAV down, I'd give him an 7 year deal and brochures for Robidas Island.

3x7*. Had to be on the team by the deadline to be eligible for 8.

Oh right. Why bother with trading for his rights then?

Helps jump start things. If this gets done now they can put more resources into attracting other targets like Roy right off the bat.

Also, ya know, a 7th round pick in 2026 and a RFA they almost certainly weren't going to qualify isn't exactly much to worry about.

The following practices also shall not be permitted under this Agreement and may not be included in any SPC, nor otherwise agreed to by any Club, any person or any entity:

(iv) An SPC with a term of greater than seven (7) years, provided, however, that a Club may sign a Player to an SPC with a term of up to eight (8) years if that Player was on such Club?s Reserve List as of and since the most recent Trade Deadline. With respect to potential Unrestricted Free Agents only, the ability to re-sign a Player to an SPC of eight (8) years expires when the Player becomes an Unrestricted Free Agent.

Let's guess when the dust settles June 30th, there are 6 top 4 UFA dmen left.
Leafs want two of them.

If Tanev is signed, their focus will be on the other - on one more dman.
If they don't sign him, other teams can duke it out for Tanev and they know the others they have to go after.

Presumably, they'll have a parallel effort going for a goalie.

The sooner they pin those down, the sooner they can sort out Domi or whoever else they're interested in with whatever cap is left.

Time is of the essence on July 1 as the dominos of UFAs fall.

A 7th round pick seems cheap for the luxury of getting a jump on July 1 dmen

Giordano, at 40, is the oldest player in the league. No one would seriously think even a 5 year term was on good faith.
