Jim Hiller is the new Head Coach

" clear cap room for potential re-toolin"
That one smelled pretty badly to me

Benoit at $1.35M/yr vs RFA Andrae with arbitration hammer is roughly a cap sawoff
Ersson they're unlikely to re-sign so that isn't a cap problem

Who here thinks Woll wouldn't get picked up on waivers after a team effectively just traded a 3rd rounder for him?
I think that is very unlikely.

So their clear cap room claim strikes me as BS

I think it's a cap clearing move in the sense that the goalies were going to cost somewhere around $8.25m next season and now the goalie room will come in around $4.55m.

They have around ~27 million of cap space right now and no one to really even spend most of that on anyway. How much more do they need??

Hildeby (841k)+Andrae (874k QO) isn't going to even remotely command Woll + Benoit numbers (~5M); Philadelphia yo-yo'd him so much he also has almost no arbitration case. Conservatively, that's 3M more room without making a hole in the roster, getting a better skater, and an additional trade chip/sweetener in the 3rd rder, for the price of 30ish games of whatever the drop off is between Woll to Hildeby (your mileage may vary).

Sure it's all marginal stuff, but they stack up in whatever direction they go.

AFP Analytics project Andrae, with RFA arbitration, will get 2.12M/yr x 2 years which is > Benoit at $1.35M x 1 year

The stuff with moving Woll is something a grade school child could figure out
Stolarz or Woll had to go. Over the last 3 seasons, Woll is 21st among NHL goalies in save%, only 2 years left on his deal
So they knew they could dump him any time to get free of his cap hit and not make a hole in the roster. One email would do it.
I do not see it as some big accomplishment. A GM could do it in their sleep.

I don't think anyone is extolling this transaction as foundational or mountain moving, but there was merely some confusion about why the transaction was made. My confusion now is in trying to figure out what point you're trying to get across.

Special guest star on the zoom call lol

The one in which John Chayka presents a more robust case for hiring Jim Hiller than Keith Pelley presented for hiring John Chayka.

One of us!

Willy approved
Surprised Simmons didn't bust in when Jim was talking "John, how did you arrive at hiring Jim, because 19 of the 20 GM's I talked to said he was a no talent hack."

They weren't going to get Emil Andrae for free.

Emil is replacing Rielly -- Rielly $7.5m/yr x 3 years > Andrae $2.12m/yr x 2 years.

I really don't think Andrae is the Rielly replacement. I think he's a win your third line minutes with a guy who doesn't chuck pizzas up the ice replacement.

The only way the clearing cap space comment makes a lot of sense is if they have who they're targeting and plan to spend right to the top of the cap. Obviously then it makes a lot of sense to move off of two potentially unreliable goalies, and now you only have one potentially unreliable goalie and one developing goalie with a third one waiver exempt if need be. I don't think that's a terrible play. I'd rather AA play a bit than a Michael Hutchinson type and Hildeby showed a lot last year given the tumult the team was in.
