Jays Down the Stretch

There are 43 games and 5 home/road stretches left on the year so I figured in the style of Zee's 10-game chunks it might be nice to keep track of the schedule down the stretch.

The toughest series in this group of eight appears to be the Angels. Confident the Jays will match 'em though.  All road-games schedule.  This will be a test for the Jays on how they'll handle the w/l column.

The Jays w/l breakdown:  Home 40-33  Road:  25-31

Road record needs improvement.

GO JAYS GO!!

Iiinteresting: http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/blue-jays-send-hutchison-to-triple‒a-in-roster-shakeup/

Down: Drew Hutchinson
Up: Ezequiel Carrera, Matt Hague

Jays rolling 4-man for the next to take advantage of upcoming off-days, and to bolster the bench for National League rules.

I'd rather not see Carrera back up with the team as the 4th outfielder.  He's hitting poorly down in AAA and he really can only handle playing a mediocre LF.  I would have liked to have seen them pick up Chris Heisey's contract.  While not ideal, Heisey can actually play in CF so you would have an option to pinch hit for Pillar in a late-game situation.

Interesting. Also helps keep Hutchison on his throwing schedule, so that he's good to go when they bring him back up.

Yeah, as well as keeping the other 4 on a fairly regular routine. Quite a shrewd move overall. I can see Pompey coming in for either Hague or Carrera once he shows he's fully recovers from his rolled ankle (probably Carrera). Hague can give Donaldson some rest (slightly) better than Pennington can.

I don't know why they don't run with the hot hand... his last two starts have been great. I suppose two games does not make a season. I wouldn't hesitate to bring him back after the 8 games in 10 days to make sure everyone continues to get regular rest.

Whose hand is hot when the whole rotation has been (mostly) on fire?

I think it's more about whichever part of the rotation they were in leading up to the off days and it happened to be Hutchinson. Plus, we're going on the road where Hutch really under performs for some reason.

This. As well as he's pitched over his last 2 starts, he's still been the team's 5th best starting pitcher since the team added Price.

Also, for all the good his last two starts have been, he still has an abysmal road record.  He hasn't made it past 5.1 IP since May 14th.  His last 5 starts on the road he went 2.1, 5.0, 4.2, 5.0 and 4.0 innings.  If it wasn't for his absurd run support he would be vying for a spot next to Mike Maroth.  I like the move.  Hide him against two important teams out West who are still very much alive in a fight for the 1st wildcard and he comes back at the end of the month for the homestand.

I'd rather see Dickey on short rest/an extra start out of Price because of an off-day than the gamble that Hutch can pitch on the road for the rest of the year.  And to be perfectly honest, if I'm drawing up my playoff rotation right now, I'd honestly rather have Estrada than Hutch...and if Stroman does make it back and looks good, I'd bump Estrada for Stroman as the 4th starter for a 7-game series.

I'm okay with sending Hutch down and going with a 4 man rotation due to the multiple off-days and long road trip ahead. I'm sure we'll see him back up if not for the Tigers series then for the start of September.

Loup should have been sent down a long time ago! Glad to see the Jays now have enough decent arms in the pen to make this happen. I'm sure he'll be back up when rosters expand in September, but if so Delabar better be coming too.

I agree that Heisey would have been nice to see up instead of Carrera, but to Ezequiel's credit he did hit while with the big club so the Jays are showing him some loyalty that way. It is true though that Heisey is a much more versatile outfielder.

Glad to see Matt Hague get his shot with the big club. He has been by far the best hitter on the Bisons all season putting up big numbers. He'll be part of that 1B/DH rotation along with EE and Smoak. He isn't a prospect anymore, but I think the Jays would like to get him up as a thank you for a solid season and let him celebrate his 30th birthday this week as a major leaguer...classy move!

Just bought tickets the the Yankees game on the 22 of Sept.

I don't think I've been to a game that late since the late mid 90s.

Goof times.

Bryan Mitchell was making a spot start for the Yankees and got hit in the face with a linedrive and had to leave the game.  Minnesota has a 4-3 lead in the 3rd inning.

They don't actually have a spot on the 40 man roster to do that right now. They could create one pretty easily by putting Saunders on the 60 days DL (which I'm surprised they haven't), but since this is likely only for the 2 games in Philly, probably not worth it.

Baseball is popular or something?

https://twitter.com/ArashMadani/status/633405159947784192

(2.03 million viewers for the Yankees game on Friday night with a peak at well over 3 million during Tulowitzki's final at bat).

The average ratings for the Stanley Cup playoffs this year was 1.5 million with 2.6 million for the Stanley Cup Finals.  Granted there wasn't a Canadian team in the finals but that was a pretty solid finals this year with Tampa and Chicago.

It's amazing how much money the Blue Jays have left on the table by fielding such a bad team over the past 2 decades. They have a whole country willing to support them but 2 decades of crap is a long time. I would bet the Blue Jays budget will continue to grow now that they realize what kind of fan base is available to them.

Gibby announced today that Saunders has been shut down for the season so there is a spot open now.

Jays also announced they signed RHP Derek Blacksher to a minor league deal. I'm not sure if AA is trying to find a diamond in the rough because on the surface it doesn't make sense. 30 year old who hasn't played affiliated ball since 2007 and that was rookie/low A level.

Some minor league depth after they traded away so many young arms.
