Hyman officially going to Edmonton

Basically how I see it. Hyman's going to really fortify Edmonton's top-6, especially since they seem to have had a problem finding a 4th winger there. He'll give them 4 solid years, maybe drift off in years 5 and 6, and then enjoy an early retirement at year 7 via LTIR.

I wish him the best.

When he first extended here, I thought it would definitely be his final contract with the Leafs, but around year 2-3, I hoped they'd find a way to go a bit longer. In any case, this is for the best result for both the Leafs and Hyman (and probably not good for Edmonton in like 2 years), so it's a win-win-win in my books.

I think we should be clear about what happened here. Hyman earned a big contract. He earned this contract. The only reason this is in any way controversial is because the cap makes it so the Leafs couldn't give him the contract he'd earned.

I'm happy for Hyman, I think he'll be good in Edmonton for  the bulk of this deal but I can't lie and say that watching a homegrown talent earn a contract with the Leafs and watch the Leafs say "We're not allowed to pay him what he's worth" isn't the sort of thing that chips away at my affection for this sport and the Leafs.

Agreed.  I hate the cap.  Or at least I hate a rigid cap that helps to promote mediocrity in terms of league performance.  I would much rather have an NBA style cap with a Bird Rights system to let the core of a team stay together.

Won't look pretty at the tail end of the contract, but he'll be a great fit for the Oilers.  Good for him.  Can't complain if you're him -- go from playing alongside the best goal scorer in the league to now the best player on the planet.

And I too absolutely despise the cap.

I predicted north of $6, 6.2 I think.  :P :-*

Anyway, what Nik said: he's earned it.

He's earned a big payday but he's def overpaid. Wish him well.
