Clearly, a lot of GMs around the league agree with you. Word was the Oilers had been shopping him hard for a couple months now, and everyone was balking at their asking price. He's a skilled player, no doubt, but he's also a fragile one.
I understand why Edmonton re-signed him, if he can get healthy agian he could do some damage with the young talent they have. Still, overpriced though.
Man, I'm torn on this one. I think there is about a 3% chance he stays healthy over the two seasons. If he does, he's talented enough and works hard enough to live up to the contract, but man, you need a gun at my head to do that deal.
I wouldn't have done this deal for the Leafs, but I think it's a good fit for the Oilers. Hemsky's injury troubles are definitely well-documented, but aside from this season he's been putting up just under PPG numbers since the lockout. Like with the Connolly contract, the 2-year deal makes me not worry so much about his injury troubles. If it were a 4 or 5 year deal like it was speculated a week or so ago, then yeah there would have been issues.
Also, the Oilers need Hemsky if they're going to succeed. After Eberle they have nothing going for them on the right wing. And while there might be some candidates to replace him via free agency, the Oilers haven't exactly had much luck in that department. If Hemsky walked they would have been in trouble.
