This is the second game of a home-and-home series between these two teams. The Leafs defeated the Islanders Monday night at home at the ACC, by a score of 3-0, with Jonas Gustavvson earning the shutout. The Leafs managed to shut down the Islanders leading point getter, John Tavares, who was on a 12 game scoring streak.
As for the Islanders themselves, apart from the "face of the franchise" John Tavares, forwards Matt Moulson and Pierre Parenteau, there isn't really much to excite Isles fans this season. Considering that this club finished near the bottom of the Eastern Conference last season, the IslesNation was expecting at least an improvement in the team's overall play...and a nudge in the standings, too. No playoff expectations yet, but getting there. Well, much to the fans disappointment, this season has been anything but a success. When a team can count on a few core players to provide offense while being weak down the middle, and when out of six only one can be called a decent defenceman, and when your goaltending situation has resembled a three (make that four) ring circus for much of the year -- injuries to Montoya, Nabokov (all healthy now), DiPietro out for season with hernia surgury, and Kevin Poulin the rookie backup -- all does not add up to much of a resurgence, if one could call it that, for this team.
The Maple Leafs did all the right things in last night's victory over the Isles, leaving the LeafsNation to wonder why this team cannot be consistent enough over the length of the season. The Leafs, once occupiers of sixth spot in the East, have free-fallen of late into ninth place. A streaky team no doubt, winning in bunches, then losing for same, it leaves a puzzling impression as to why certain Leaf players aren't contributing in the goal-scoring department the way they once did (such as in last season). Ditto MacArthur, Kulemin (a more well-rounded player some say, but, where are the goals?!), Schenn's early season deterioration on the defence (sans his long-departed defence partner, the trusted and experienced Tomas Kaberle), the goaltenders Reimer (still not completely a hundred percent apparently) and Gustavvson, playing well of late, but, these two still don't instill that sense of complete confidence. Something is still lacking somewhat overall with Leafs as a whole.
