Fixing the PK

Hopefully we don't have a bunch of forwards injured due to improper shot blocking technique trying to impress the coach. I can't even picture Kulemin blocking a shot and he rarely would of course.  But maybe a guy not scoring feels he has to do that bit extra to show his worth.

Uh, Kulemin was tied for 2nd highest shot block totals among Leaf forwards last year with Bozak, they were both 10bks behind their leader Brent who was 28th in the league amongst forwards.

Yeah, 48 isn't a big number but one certainly can picture it from that, oh and he led the Leaf forwards in bks the year before that...

Kulemin led the Leafs forwards in blocked shots the year before in '09-10.

Last year 48 blocked shots tied for 55th out of 400+ forwards in the league. Bozak & Brent (and many other NHL forwards) played a lot more PK where more opportunities for blocked shots tend to occur. So Kulemin probably racked up a bunch at even strength in order to keep pace with them.

Getting back to your comment of a couple of days ago, cw, Schenn needs to be the shutdown guy on the PK.  That's what he's projected to be, and that's what he needs to work on relentlessly until he is that guy.  Otherwise he's just being massively overpaid, since he brings almost no offense and (it's pretty apparent by now) he never will.

Also, just wondering ... what was our PK % when Finger was playing?  I don't particularly remember him making any big difference but am just wondering.....

Reimer has not been playing well since his injury and that is part of the problem.  As they say your best PKer is the goalie

That certainly isn't helping the situation  when he has his own
teammates who don't even know what to do in front of him.

If my memory was correct in looking at the boxscores, the Leafs have only had 2 games in their last 14 where they have had more PP opportunities than the opposing team.

And what's weird about that stat is that Toronto hasn't really been outplayed by many of those teams. Not that that absolves their horrid pk and weak goaltending but it almost seems to be something more than an anomolly.

Well, we're tied for 29th, though San Jose has given up 9 fewer ppga as they have been shorthanded 33 times fewer than the Leafs.

Yes would be a huge start.  The 5 on 3's were insane last night.  Consistently taking more penalties than your opponents is a recipe for disaster no matter how good your PK is.

If they just stood there, playing a passive box and only moved if it was a guaranteed clear they would be better off then what theyre doing currently. This is about as pathetic as it gets folks...

Consistently taking more penalties than your opponents is a recipe for disaster no matter how good your PK is.

.. and vice versa.  However good your PK is, consistently taking penalties against the opposition will also result in a recipe for disaster.
