Ex Penguin Adam Johnson

Took a skate to the throat last night playing for my local team, Nottingham Panthers, against Sheffield. Sounds like the injury may have been fatal.

Confirmed by his team.

Terrible.

And terrible for the Sheffield Player also

It's crazy that they don't mandate cut resistant neck guards for the pros. Even the neck guards in youth sports have become smaller and smaller.

I was looking forward to seeing him play. It sounds like he was settling in really well, putting up decent numbers and seemed to be a real positive in the dressing room. My bosses son in law plays on the same team as him.

My partner has knife proof sleeves available for troublesome pupils.i don't know why a neck guard and maybe even something to cover all vital arteries isn't available.

They are available, just not being utilized. There's cut resistant sleeves, socks, and of course neck guards. I do believe that the majority of neck guards are now cut resistant. But they're so small(and worn improperly), they're basically useless. Heck, when we play teams from some States, they don't even mandate neck guard use for their minor hockey players.

Not only this, but they should mandate full cages.  It's beyond ridiculous that basic safety equipment that would be required without a second thought in any other workplace is made optional in hockey.  Players grew up with them.  No excuses.

I feel bad for you and other fans, not to mention his friends and family.  What a horrifying thing to happen.

There were 8000 or so in the building, including many kids. The video was also being shown live on a webcast and has seemingly also been widely circulated on social media since (that?s another debate). I?m so thankful I haven?t seen it.

I don?t know how you would cope seeing that happen in the arena. I also take my 5 year old fairly regularly now and I can?t even imagine how you start to explain it or deal with a kid who?s seen it.

I?ve also a huge amount of sympathy for the Sheffield player whose skate did the damage. How do you accept that even knowing it was a freak accident.  (And again I?ve seen some disgraceful stuff targeted at him on social media including calling him a murderer).

On some level this is social commentary on how bad we as a society we have become.  I often use the Danny Heatley incident as a reference.  After Danny Heatley demanded a trade out of Ottawa, his first came back was a gong show.  People had signs up in the stands with the text "Dangerous curves ahead" and "We don't want a murderer here anyway".  People took the worst day of that mans life and used it against him in a public way because he didn't want to play hockey in Ottawa anymore. That's it.  And somehow, because of that he deserves to have that thrown in his face.  Kind of despicable when you think about it.

I couldn't imagine how traumatic that was for everyone there.

I wear a full cage as an adult playing in rec league, I should put a neck guard on, we all should.

It's mandatory now from next year in the UK league. "recommended" now.
Lovely touch to see the tributes at arenas around the world. Going to be emotional game at the next Panthers game.

Dubas coming through. wrist guards as well

The coroner has concluded that there is "risk of further similar deaths" and therefore recommended all players over 18 are mandated to wear neck guards.

Not sure what the full legal process is, but I hope it's the start of a change.

Update:

Arrested on suspicion of manslaughter. Which in North American terms I guess is ?unintentional? murder.

Utterly stupid.

Not trying to incite anything, but have you seen the video?  Or, at least, what happened to lead to the incident?  Before you develop an opinion, watch the play.  The incident happened in the middle of the ice, as Johnson is cutting at the blueline.  I think it absolutely warrants legal review.
