I would love for the Rangers to be a complete and utter flop this year.  Some teams have to flop if the Leafs have any hope of making the playoffs.

They are a Lundqvist injury away from being just that, I think.

I don't think he gets hurt though, if anything it'll be Gaborik.

Seems to me the Rags just paid Dubinsky UFA money anyway.... Slats, oh Slats .... when will you ever learn? Never we hope...

Sources with knowledge of the briefs submitted on behalf of the 25-year-old winger and on behalf of the club have told The Post that Dubinsky has requested a contract worth $4.6 million while the Rangers have come in at $2.8 million.

While the gulf appears exceptionally wide, Elizabeth Neumeier, the arbitrator presiding over the case, is empowered to select any figure between the parties' requests. As such, the disparity in the submissions should not ring any alarm bells, given that they are strategic rather than necessarily reasonable.

Both sides expect Dubinsky, who will still owe one more season to the Rangers as a restricted free agent at the conclusion of this year, to gain an arbitration-directed salary of between $3.8 million and $4.4 million.

Regardless of the conclusion, which could be announced as early as tomorrow but likely will not come until Monday, the Rangers have no intention of walking away from the settlement figure.

Dubinsky led the club in goals, assists and points (24-30-54), establishing career highs in each category while working on the final year of a two-year deal under which he earned an average of $1.875 million per season.

I figured he'd get $4ish.

He's been a darn good player for them. He can play top 6 center pretty well (which earns him a premium - NHL centers get paid more whether one agrees with that or not) and is versatile enough to be a decent winger. He was by far their top forward in time on ice - playing in all situations. 52.4 win% in faceoffs.

They bought two UFA years.

I'm not shocked nor think the Rangers grossly overpaid. I would love to have him on the Leafs over any center we have.

It does but, as cw points out, that's because those are two UFA years. It looks like a pretty good deal to me. Maybe a little much in year one and two but if this month is any indication Dubinsky may be underpaid in his two UFA years.

I completely agree. I still hope it comes back to bite Slats on the a$$ tho....

Sure, but you could probably say that about any team who has a clear-cut number one goalie.

Fair enough. Though a case can be made that Lunqvist is more valuable to his team than most keepers. Really, there had been him and little else (relatively speaking) of late. Richards should help, but still.

I always thought of them to have pretty good forward depth actually, they were just missing that one piece on the top line (Richards). That would depend on guys like Stepan, Anisimov, and Boyle continuing their play from last season though. Defence is definitely young and inexperienced though.

Seems like a pretty fair number, all things considered. Leaves the Rags with enough cap space to sign Dubinsky edit: Callahan, but I am not sure what they're planning to do with their defense, especially when we factor in the fact that bonuses count toward the cap this year (so some of their youngers guys like Del Zotto have higher cap hits).

I'm assuming you meant Callahan? Anyway, I wonder if the Rangers would consider waiving Wolski or getting cap space from somewhere else and offering Hannan a contract. I'm pretty surprised he's still kicking around, and he'd be a nice veteran presence to their young blueline.

Yeah, I meant Callahan.

I think Wolski is all but gone. I'm surprised that Hannan is still around as well, and would be a decent veteran guy on the team. The interesting thing though is their cap situation is a little screwed by Redden. He's counting against the cap until September, so they could be really hampered from signing anyone until quite close to the season starts, so they might not have much to pick from.

EDIT: Obviously trading Wolski is another option, but they wouldn't be looking for much salary back...I wonder if he could be had for future considerations (along with a draft pick?) so the Rags can get their guy now (or at least, before mid-September?)

It actually seems like a pretty fair deal. Had he been a UFA there is no doubt that he would have received significantly more.

I think it's a pretty reasonable contract. Not a steal, but not an overpayment either. Dubinsky has the potential to improve on his offensive stats as well, especially if he gets to play on a line with Richards and Gaborik.

edit: This could also be a very good comparison for Kulemin next summer. They are pretty similar players.

I was thinking that myself regarding Kulemin. Ladd and Stafford would be two other reasonable comparables.

I also wonder what kind of deal is in store for Callahan, who Rangers fans insist was their heart and soul forward this past season.
