DeBrincat traded to Ottawa

I was looking forward to laughing at whatever Ottawa picked.

Just going to laugh at Chicago instead, who is tearing things down to the studs after dumping a boatload of assets into signing Seth Jones long term.

This feels like very good value for DeBrincat, but it'll really all come down to the contract they get him signed to. He could become an UFA after 2 seasons, and I don't really see the sens being a playoff team in either of those. They need to get him signed to a long-term deal.

Also jesus christ every sens fan owes Matt Murray a huge thank-you for declining that Buffalo trade.

haha this

Assuming that was true, how on earth does a team go from "let's use the 7th overall to clear some cap space" to "actually we'll acquire one of the best young goal scorers with it instead".

There is a lot of noise about Ottawa making big swings and noise (Chychrun, DeBrincat, etc), but like... they're a lot farther from contention (in the Atlantic division no less) than those two players and their existing pool of Stutzle + middle-6ers.

If whoever's running things was willing to spend to the cap they could fill out the rest of the roster with some good players to get them into the playoff conversation at least. If they add Giroux that's a pretty good set of top-6 forwards, albeit one without a really high-end C though. And they'd still have room to add another big forward or add a defencemen. If that happened and Forsberg played like he did last season then who knows. All depends on how much they're willing to spend.

Wonder if Dubas explored picking up Debrincat? Wonder if our first and Robertson could have gotten it done?

Doesn?t even equal the value of the 7th overall pick. So, no, no it does not. Never mind the cap complications to make it work.

I guess I'm just not that impressed? I think Debrincat is a good player but I also think he's played a lot with one of the best set-up guys in modern NHL history and probably he's being a little oversold as a result. I don't think the return is great on him but I genuinely don't think it's that far off either.

I'm with you on this one. Playing with Kane def had its benefits

The trade is decent value for DeBrinicat but also feels like a good return for what Ottawa gave up...especially if he is willing to extend.

Why on earth would he extend in Ottawa?

Depends how well they do I would guess, not sure otherwise

I haven?t looked too much into this, but doesn?t this feel like the Kessel trade? I guess the biggest difference is Ottawa knows what draft position they are giving up.

They?re also giving up a lot less value, though they?re getting fewer years of control. And knowing where the top picks they?re giving up are in the draft order is a pretty significant difference.

Ottawa also has better young talent than the Leafs did at that point - which, granted, is a low bar, but still a substantial difference.
