The New York Rangers have avoided arbitration with another one of their young forwards, signing Ryan Callahan to a three-year contract.

The two sides were scheduled to have an arbitration hearing on July 28, but have come to terms instead.

Kypreos tweeted that the contract is valued "in the ballpark of $13M." That put the Rags over the cap. They'll have to move someone or buy someone out.
 
Yeah, reports are that it is just south of 13M, which gives him a similar cap to Dubinsky...I wonder if he does come in at 4.2 per?

Wolski's played his last as a Ranger, one would think...

Does them being over the cap include Redden? I remember reading in here that he counts towards the cap until the season starts and he goes back to the minors.

Correct me if I am wrong, please. :)

Yeah, he counts during the off-season, although I don't think busta was counting him when he says they're now over the cap. Presently, they're pretty much using up every bit of their 10% overage allowed in the off-season. I don't think they can add another contract until they can put Redden/Wolski on waivers, or move a player out in a trade.

I was looking more at their projected opening day roster and the cap. They could potentially save some cap space by going with cheaper guys in a couple spots (and, in the unlikely event they don't want to buy-out Wolski, they may have to).

EDIT: apparently, that last season is actually $4.875, not that it changes much.

Cap hit works out to ~$4.29M per.
 
Even if they do end up having to get rid of Wolski I can't help but look at that roster and see a really good team. A thin defense maybe but a heck of a top 6.

*Really* thin defense. But definitely a good set of forwards, and a really great goalie.

Their defence is very inexperienced, that's for sure, but there's some interesting young talent there.
 
Even though it's a shorter deal, I'm surprised he got a little more than Dubinsky. I figured he'd get a little less.

Erixon is a rookie who has not played in NA and his cap hiyt is $1.75. I expect Del Zotto is probably penciled in which saves them about $700k more on their cap leaving them $1.35 mil cap space to sign a 7th dman (in theory - I have doubts that is precisely what they will do).

Apparently Wolski and his $3.8 mil will not be bought out. He can be waived or traded. They're deeper at center so a trade there could help spring some cap space. And they could go with a 22 man roster to start the season to help their cap.

Bottom line is they still probably have to add a dman for the PP in my opinion though the no-name stay-at-home kids they've got within their D are probably better than some folks are giving them credit for.

I don't see a horrible cap issue for them to make adjustments between now and the start of the season.
 
One of the big keys to their blueline is whether the Staal/Girardi pairing can maintain the same level of play as last year. The two averaged 25:44 and 24:34 mins/game respectively and held their own pretty well.

Beyond that, McDonagh/Sauer probably fit in on the 2nd pairing again and Del Zotto will probably pair with someone else on the third pairing. That's assuming that DZ rebounds from last year. Erixon may fit in there as well, though it's hard to say where.

It's definitely an inexperienced blueline, but also potentially a very good one... maybe not next year, but certainly beyond that.
 
It also seems that they've been hit with a 500K cap penalty for bonus overages carried over from last year. According to capgeek that is.

Yeah. That's been included in their calculations for a while now.

If he gets picked up by another team, yes, the claiming team takes the whole cap hit.

If he gets sent down, no cap hit when he is in the AHL.

If he gets picked up when getting called up, half the cap hit will stay with rangers, half will be picked up by the claiming team.
