Game Notes
COL
-Scott Wedgewood will likely start for the Avalanche
-Colorado is unsurprisingly off to a hot start to the season. They lead the league so far in goals, averaging 5.75 per game
TOR
-Anthony Stolarz will likely start for the Leafs
-Tavares will miss this game as he's back in Toronto for the birth of his fourth child: Tucker Tavares
-With JT out the coaching staff will get to experiment with the lines at even-strength and also with PP1. Nick Paul will be the major benefactor as he moves up to the 2C spot
-Miles Wood was recalled by the Leafs on Friday. He did not get a practice with the team though so it's unknown if he'll be making his Leafs debut here
-Also notable that Hiller adjusted his top-4 defence pairings at practice on Friday, with Raddysh lining up beside McCabe and Rielly with Tanev
Streams

McCabe - Raddysh
Best all around dman who skates well joins best offensive dman who is not the quickest

Rielly +7 - Tanev +8
Won a gold medal together in 2016 as Team Canada's top pair in the World Championships
Maybe I'm forgetting someone but this is the first time, in his 14th season with the Leafs, that I can recall Rielly being paired with a good quality, right handed defensive dman.
I've wanted to see this pairing since they got Tanev.
Hopefully, they get at least 5 games.

The tough part is they're breaking them in against Colorado

I'm not sure why they are accomodating Roslovic at RW, at the expense of Marchenko playing his off side. Think Columbus would part with Knies? He'd slot into that LW position pretty nicely... 😶

McKenna (99th Percentile)-Sissons (84th Percentile)-Groulx (81st Percentile)
Those are their max NHL EDGE skating speed percentiles in the last 3 seasons.

I'm not sure if it is the fastest line the Leafs have presented recently but it has to be up there.

Might be fun :)

Marchenko played LW/C coming up in the Russian leagues (much more common on wider ice) and only switched to RW by the Columbus coaching staff.

Hiller also prefers wingers playing on their shooting side as it opens up options for coming off the boards to attack the middle lanes.
1:42 is when the question comes up

Some wingers have done well playing the off side
Kucherov
Ovechkin
Jagr
Rantanen
Recchi
Mogilny
St. Louis
Bure
Richard
Cournoyer
Andreychuk
... (there are many more ..)

One thing they generally like is the better shooting angle on goal

We are going to see Roslovic or Matthews swinging down their strong side around behind the net on their forehands feeding a pass to the slot for a Marchenko one-timer to the mid-blocker side for goals all season long.

Worth mentioning too that even Columbus was going to have him start the season at left wing prior to the trade.

I'm pretty sure they tried them together two years ago before Tanev McCabe became that dominant pairing
