Admittedly it's still a long way off but some concrete news:

https://twitter.com/reporterchris/status/1356983016556552194

Seems like an alright choice.

Right now, my roster would look something like:

Mackinnon-McDavid-Marner
Marchand-Crosby-Point
Hall-Tavares-Seguin
Scheifele-Bergeron-Couturier
Stamkos

Theodore-Pietrangelo
Giordano-Makar
Doughty-Weber
Parayko

Price
Hart
Binnington

Or something like that anyway. Would like to see some LHD emerge to challenge for a spot.

I was going to say that Sakic seemed like the natural choice to eventually take over this role from Armstrong once he maybe retired... but then I looked and found out that Doug Armstrong is only 56 years old?! This isn't based on appearance or anything but in my mind considering how long he's been around I always figured he was like mid or late 60s.

Took a trip to his wiki. He was first hired by the Stars in 1991 when he was just 27 years old and became their GM at the age of 38. I'm guessing that was pretty young for that time.

I'd like to see Marner squeeze in there somewhere but I just don't see where that fit would be. Same goes for Rielly but that would take a return to his form from 2 years ago to even get a sniff.

Like, on the first line, where Nik put him?

HaHa yes right there. Man....And to think I read the list 3 times

Huh. I'd say Marner is just about a lock.

Seriously read the lines 3 times and still didn't see the name there. I need to sleep more.

Apologies...Carry on.
Haha, it happens. It's like responding to someone and then when you re-read it, you discover you misinterpreted what the poster was really saying.....delete lol.

Ah. I thought that you didn't agree with him being on there, not that you didn't see it.

Anyways, it's a tough call. There are some really good players not there. I think you need good PKers so Couturier/Bergeron seem necessary but there are also guys like O'Reilly knocking about. There's Huberdeau for offense, Horvat if they're looking young and because Team Canada is loyal to guys you have to think they'll give Benn and Toews every opportunity to prove themselves.

No, not disagreeing at all. Just blind.

You're right about them giving the "old guard" a shot at impressing. Hopefully they don't fall too in love with nostalgia and put together the best team.

Marchand-Crosby-Bergeron
HuberdeauMcDavid-MacKinnon-Marner
Scheifele-Point-Stamkos
Couturier-O'Reilly-Stone

L1: If it ain't broke, don't fix it. A non-Babcock coach might not go back to this but I still think the Perfection line has 1 more Olympics in them.

L2: Huberdeau doesn't exactly scream "Olympian", but the dude's 4th among Canadians in points since 18/19 and the team needs natural LWers. If Huberdeau isn't up to snuff I probably go with Tavares there. I guess I forgot someone. This team is too friggin' good. You know what, just toss McDavid on his wing there and watch this line score a goal per shift.

L3: Tampa Bay connection here. I built the 4th line before figuring out their winger and Scheifele was just too good to not have in the line-up so he goes on his off-wing.

L4: Arguably 3 of the top-5 defensive forwards in the entire league. If a dedicated defensive line like this isn't needed, and maybe it isn't, you could sub Coots or ROR into Huberdeau's spot to give that line a defensive upgrade

Extra forward comes down to one of Tavares/Huberdeau or Toews. If Toews can return this season and get back to PPG numbers like he did in 18/19 then he can still play himself on the team.

Theodore-Pietrangelo
Rielly-Weber
Spurgeon-Makar
Doughty

D1: Vegas pairing, again chemistry matters in these tournaments

D2: Trying not to be too much of a homer but I have a hard time not seeing Rielly on the team, mostly because of the lack of LHDs. Should make up for Weber's lack of mobility

D3: This is where you eventually need a righty to move over and I thought Spurgeon seems like a guy who can handle that. This will probably be the first and last time Cale Makar ever plays on someone's bottom pairing

Extra defence... I'm giving Doughty a small chance that he might bounce back this season after all the talk of him being finished as an elite guy. If that talk is true then one of Ekblad/Hamilton/Parayko would all work here. Probably lean Ekblad.

Price
Hart
Binnington

This seemed 100% locked in before this season started, but Fleury's 3-0 start before Vegas' season went on pause made me wonder if he might be a better guy to have around in the lockerroom than Binnington. Barring injury this is obviously the Price show though.

I was curious about the US team but didn't want to put in the work, so here's Craig Custance's version:

EtUGWxJWgAIO1GP

They certainly don't benefit from having a dozen or so elite centres to move around the line-up, but that's still pretty good. Matthews and Eichel as 1-2 has to be the best centres they've ever had.

You could make an old team and a young team out of Canada's candidate pool
This is by no means comprehensive

Up to 2009 draft
Marchand - Crosby - Bergeron
Kadri - Tavares - Stamkos
Toews - O'Reilly - Giroux
N. Foligno - Couture - Cizikas

Giordano - Pietrangelo

Bernier

Babies
Dubois - McDavid - Marner
Huberdeau - MacKinnon - Scheifele
Cirelli - Couturier - Stone
Tofolli - Danault - Gallagher

Theodore - Makar
Chabot - Hamilton
Rielly - Parayko
