2015 MLB Playoffs Thread

I thought it might be good to have a place to talk about non-Jays stuff for the postseason.

Like, for instance, CC Sabathia being out of the Yankees rotation as he checks himself into Rehab.

Obviously best of luck to CC as he struggles with his issues. It is, however, a tough loss for the Yankees as Sabathia had been very good in September. Still, his health should come first.

I am a fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates. and yes I am bitter that they have the 2nd best record in baseball and in 9 innings that season is over.. But those are the rules and got to deal with them.. Cubs are no joke. they are the 3rd best record in baseball.. Go Bucs

This isn't playoff related but the Marlins re-signed Ichiro today to a one year, two million dollar deal. I genuinely don't know how to explain this. Ichiro's slash line this year was .225/.282/.279. That's an OPS of .561. By comparison Zack Greinke, a pitcher, had an OPS of .575.

He had 398 at-bats and 11 extra base hits. He was 11 for 16 as a base-stealer. His OPS+ was 56. He was barely above replacement level in the outfield. His WAR was -1.2. To put it mildly, he's basically terrible at everything. He can't really play baseball anymore.

So what are the Marlins thinking? He's 65 hits away from 3000. Are they that cynical that they'd re-sign him just to maybe cash in on that?

Yep.  They are using the silly "he's a good veteran in the clubhouse" nonsense.  That and Jefrrey Loria doesn't care.  Paying Ichiro 2 million to be awful means they can avoid signing actual players to their baseball team.  I feel bad for Stanton.  I know he signed there or a bazillion dollars but his career numbers would be so much better if he played literally anywhere else.

Also the Yankees are about done.  Down 3-0 in the bottom of the 8th and Keuchel completely shut down the Yankkes going 6 innings with only 3 hits and 1 walk.

The atmosphere in New York is awful for a playoff game.

As unlucky as the Jays have felt at times, imagine being a Cubs fan with Daniel Murphy at the plate

7 Homeruns in 9 playoff games.  62 home runs in 903 regular season games.  I have to assume that if you broke open one of his bats you would find an aluminum core mixed with cork?  It's crazy how well he is hitting in the postseason.

I thought this was interesting. An article about how MLB is trying to keep a somewhat tighter control on teams' celebrations after winning a series and particularly not allowing what the Jays did after beating Texas with the whole spraying fans thing.

While there's a part of me that thinks it's ridiculous for MLB to clamp down on what seemed like a genuinely positive and spontaneous interaction between players and fans, the sheer number of these celebrations has sort of got me questioning them as a general rule. I think that in any other sport we'd think that reacting like that to simply qualifying for the playoffs or then winning a first round playoff series was kind of ridiculous.

When I saw the Jays do it for the first time I thought, "wow this is amazing it's great to see how excited the players are about finally getting to the playoffs after all this time!". Then I found out that basically every team did it and I thought, "wow this feels incredibly scripted and forced".

Well, that's kind of the interesting thing. I wonder if these things aren't really more about the fans. I mean, David Price and Russell Martin seemed as happy as anyone during them and both of them made the playoffs last year. Heck, they've made the playoffs more often than not in their careers.

So is it about the Jays breaking their drought? Maybe, but St. Louis and Kansas City did it just as much so who knows?

Perez gets MVP... maybe I'm missing something but it seems to me Hosmer was vital to each series... He had what, 17 RBIs in 16 games? And everytime they came from behind, he'd seem to be in the middle of it...

Anyway, I don't really care, I was just surprised by the selection.

I know that. II just thought  Hosmer had more of an impact that Perez. But I didn't do a deep dove into numbers or anything.
