I think the Leafs can, and should, try to build a line around Roy and Nylander. Maybe try Cowan on the left side. McMann - Tavares - Robertson should flashes earlier this season, see if that is sustainable. If Cowan doesn't work with Roy and Nylander find someone who does.

I'd say it was an odd move but it panned out. Rodriguez stays in the organization and the Jays freed up a roster spot. He Yariel did have an ok yeah but trailed off at the end. I'm sure he'll be on the roster come spring.

I would say I agree with your sentiment but when your team is last place in the Eastern conference you probably have to ice the lineup that gives you the best chance to win any given night. If the Leafs were in a better position in the standings maybe you would have seen a different deployment...

Besides the Matthews line (maybe) being a little worse in the defensive zone, I don't think anything has fundamentally changed too much except his shot is not as lethal as it used to be. His shot attempts are down from 2023-24, but really it's been his shooting percentage has dropped about 5%...

I think we're starting to see what Treliving & Co. were hoping for this offseason with a revamped 3rd line. Whether it is Joshua - Roy - McMann or Knies - Roy - Cowan we're seeing a line that can make a difference.
