Islanders @ Leafs - Sept. 30th, 7:30pm - Prime

Plays like these often end up as goals. Defenders and goalies see the clear and already mentally start relaxing with relief and then it gets crammed right back into the panic zone. All decision making after that is quite a bit worse than their prepared version. Similar to passes off the backboards, OT big saves turning into counter rushes, more standard blueline turnovers, etc.

Edit: ah Hiller mentions this exact thing in his post game

If I were WPG, I'd take Stolarz over Skinner.
Stolarz showed up ready to play last season. His team didn't.
He went off his game trying to compensate. It snowballed from there.

It was not as sloppy as the MTL game but there were plenty of sloppy sessions.
They now have a couple of days to sort things out to try to tighten up. Maybe get PP1 figured out some

I asked earlier about the pace of the game.
I'm not sure they're skating faster.
Maybe they're making decisions with the puck faster.
That was something Hiller had talked about.
The clip they were functioning at seemed faster than last season though when you look at individuals team speed on NHL Edge compared with last season, they seem fairly close.

Watching the Calder Cup playoffs last spring, Cowan was not the strongest forward defensively to put it gently.
Big skating circles like a vulture and then peeling off for an offensive strike. He scored so that was good. But he made defensive errors and seemed positionally all over the place at time.
In the short preseason, he seemed a little different. Saw some nice PK shifts. Not enough play for me to be sure of anything.
But we saw some nice PK shifts against MTL and then again last night.
Maybe he's just doing it more effectively, but he seems to be hounding the puck. Less vulture, more purpose.
He's showing signs as an improved player defensively. And he's off to a nice start with 3 pts.

I followed Vegas in the playoffs. Sisson was hurt. When he returned, there was an uptick. He was a good player for them. They overpaid to get him but I didn't mind his game. We all know what Paul did to this franchise in the playoffs.

Again, it is early, but we might have a pretty good 3rd line coming together.

4th line was pretty good too. Played their role. Now if they can find a way to get Matthews out of checking line center mode.
