Ah yeah I was wondering how he only got a 1-year deal.
Don't believe a Russian prospect coming over on an AHL-only deal is pretty common, but I guess it makes sense here. Obvintsev seems to have only appeared in 6 games last season in the VHL (Russia's AHL equivalent). 3 goalies on his team appeared in more games than him at 40, 16, and 7 games for each them. He also only played in 11 games before that, as he was the back-up on his Russian junior league team.
Curious what his usage would be. Obviously from a human aspect it would be nice to see him on the Marlies so he can get familiarized with North America with a fellow Russian goalie by his side. But he also needs to play a lot and it's tough to tell if he'll get in the AHL right away (or if he's even ready for it).
