TSNBobMcKenzie: NYR have traded Wojtek Wolski to the Florida Panthers.

TSNBobMcKenzie: #TradeCentre NYR trade Wojtek Wolski to FLA for defenceman Mike Vernace and a 3rd round pick in 2013.

I wonder if they're clearing the decks for Nash though they've been trying to move Wolski for quite some time.

I was considering that myself, but, according to capgeek, they didn't need to move that much salary to fit Nash under the cap this season, and this move doesn't help them at all in future seasons, wince Wolski's an RFA this summer. I think maybe they just found a taker for him.

If the Rangers get Nash I'm calling a New York-Vancouver final, with the Rangers the champions and Nash the MVP.  :'(

Darren Dreger via twitter: One of the reasons the Panthers traded for Wolski is the fact that he?s very good in shootouts.

I doubt this has much if anything to do with Nash or Brown etc. He wasn't paid much and like someone else said, the Rangers have been trying to move him for a while. Just coincidental timing.

$3.8M on the cap isn't much now?

I think it's a fair chunk of change. Rags looks like they've got the cap room this season handily for Nash alone - particularly with Wolski opening more room up. But if McDonagh or Del Zotto go as part of the Nash deal, maybe part of that deal is for a team like the Rangers to eat some contract coming back - beyond Nash - maybe a $3-4 mil dman to replace the youngster they're giving up. The Blue Jackets spent big on salary and failed big in the standings and with that are looking at some pretty big financial losses. The winner of the Nash sweepstakes may be eating some bucks to help make the deal work and help the Blue Jackets bottom line problems this season. Therefore, Wolski's departure might factor in.

I have to agree. I think the rags have made this trade for the purpose of freeing up space to bring in Nash under a comfortable cap. While I'm really torn with the idea of Burke losing out to the Rangers in yet another 'must have player' sweepstakes, it wouldn't be the end of the world. This team is not ready for the big time yet, and it might be a bit early to bring in a guy like Nash. I just hope another player of the same caliber is available when the time is right to make a move like this. That is my biggest concern.

I think there will be another guy that comes along.

I won't lose much sleep if they don't get Nash. I think he's a great player but when I consider such a deal, I wonder about a UFA like Parise or Semin that cost nothing but comparable cap space vs Nash costing us that cap space plus a boatload of prospects.

I'm not sure the Leafs are good enough or deep enough to be buyers yet.

Another player like Nash is not going to come by for probobly 5-6 years. Parise isnt going anywhere and Semin is softer than fresh bread.

Thornton comes to mind as an example but that was years ago. Richards was one thing, but missing the boat on Nash would be really unfortunate. The Leafs arent contenders yet and saying we can wait until they are to get him doesnt make any sense. They could get him now, and he'd still be here in 2-3 seasons when they are contenders. Except in that scenario, there isnt the obvious "where do we get a top 6 forward from", because he'd already be here.

If he doesnt get to Toronto, I hope he goes anywhere else but New York. If Sather picks up another **&^%$#@#$%^&*()_ player, im going to quit watching the NHL for the rest of the season.

Another possibility is that New York needs to add a depth defenseman because they are trading one or more to Columbus for Nash without getting one back.

Wolski has been expendable all season.
