A scout?s scoop on Connolly

That was painful to listen  to. It was if he was playing with hair in his bellybutton while drinking a wobbly pop and possibly on Valium.

It was.

Heard another interview with him not long after the trade. It was much better so I don't read too much into that. Sometimes, there are audio issues though I'm not sure that was the case here. We often hear players say they're excited by a trade/signing as we did in this one. But the previous one struck me as one of the more genuine. I looked for it when I created the thread and couldn't find it.

This should be the conference call from July 2.

]When you ask hockey people questions about Connolly the first thing they ask in return is: ?Can we go off the record?? They want to tell you the story or at least their version of the story. They just don?t want their names attached to the Maple Leafs? $9.5 million signing. Among the terms used to describe Connolly are: Soft. Sullen.

Difficult. Loner. Spoiled brat. Silver spoon kid. Entitled. Not a team player. Almost the opposite of what you expect most hockey players to be.

And one more thing: Supremely skilled -                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      not too flattering at all but look at the source

Couldn't Kessel be described exactly the same way?  Maybe they'll work together, or maybe the whole line will spiral into a vortex of soft sullen slumping suckiness.  I can't wait to find out lol.

Third interview with Bill Watters
http://emedia.640toronto.com/Podcasts/1064/11_0712_-_tim_connolly.mp3
- more of the same largely with him saying his hip injury of four years ago is 100%

Can't stand Simmons but he did provide quotes even if we have to be guarded on how he cherry picked them and strung them together to maybe slant his piece.

This much roughly covers how I feel about Connolly and questions about what he'll do in Toronto:
The Maple Leafs had almost no choice with Connolly. After missing on Mike Richards and Jeff Carter in trades and then missing out on Brad Richards in free agency, they had to take a bit of a step backwards. Connolly became Plan C or D. For a team desperate to fill a need at centre, he became the only viable, if questionable solution.

As for Connolly allegedly being affected by fans who "hated" him in Buffalo, Connolly is probably going to look pretty good to a lot of Leafs fans at the start. I suspect he'll get some love out the gate. That plus Phil Kessel just might elevate him and snowball into a good season.

Whether one likes the deal or not, (and under the circumstances I certainly didn't mind it recognizing potential issues could arise), all Leafs fans have to hope it works out because the prospects of making the playoffs without him playing or playing well is considerably grimmer.

Minimum 60 games and 60 pts. Anything less and I'll be officially pissed.

Shirley, you can't be serious.

I am serious... and don't call me Shirley.

I really don't think it's fair to say that his signing is a write off if he doesn't hit a PPG.

He doesn't need to hit a PPG. If he gets 55 pts in 60 games, I'll live with it... Or, 62 pts in 72 games... I'll live with that. - Follow?

I think it's fair to say that if he misses 22 games next year because, otherwise, he won't be much of a #1 centre. If he scores 60-65 points and plays in 75-80 games I think we'd all be happy. If he fails to hit either of those marks it's safe to say it won't be a very successful season.

Well, even Mats missed 12 games one year (I think it was the one where he broke his orbital bone). I would be happy with 70 games, 60 points. 50-55 would be underwhelming and I'd be unhappy, but I certainly wouldn't be pissed.
