Although didn't Anthopolous offer him a contract anyway? So the positive benefits of not signing him seem more like a happy accident than design.

He gave him a qualifying offer, but I don't know how far negotiations went after that. If I recall correctly, not very. The talk was they weren't at all on the same page.

I may not have my memories right... But I seem to remember anthopolous being very non commital towards Cabrera. The vibe I got was that he didn't really care if he came back...

But I have nothing to back that up.

We had a hole in LF until Revere come into the picture and Melky is batting .282 this season. I wouldn't say not signing Melky was a bad move, but I wouldn't say it was a good move either. I think the biggest reason they didn't resign Melky was money.

But, keeping that money available is what allowed them make moves like adding Price, Lowe and Revere. That is why it ultimately was a good move.

LF was supposed to be Michael Saunders too so it's not like AA just left it open on purpose.

Tough to predict injuries, but if anyone is prone, it's that guy.

That whole situation is a mess. Saunders was to miss most of the season, but the meniscus tear was so bad letting it heal wasn't really an option. So he had surgery to remove the meniscus completely and was supposed to only miss 5-6 weeks of playing time. Now he has a bone on bone situation in that knee and still isn't playing...definitely career threatening at this point. All this because of a sprinkler head...

Kind of reminds me of 93 when Dick Schofield was our starting SS and we lost him to a freak injury (broken forearm). We bring back Tony Fernandez as his replacement and the rest is history!

"We do want him back, we do believe he wants to be back, but he?s not a signed player. I think there?s going to be a lot of interest in him, he?s a very good player, we?re just not at a point where we can get a deal done."

It was all about money. I don't think he's worth 14 million, he's just better than an injured Saunders and any other left fielder we've had this season.
