Say goodbye to JVR

Sad to see him go. The offence will be missed.  Particularly that presence around the opposing team?s goal crease. He was so proficient at putting those ones away for the Leafs.

This doesn?t seem like it happened all that long ago....

Certainly one of the best trades the Leafs have made in the more modern era. Maybe even the best one period. Just a shame they couldn't extend that trade tree a little more with another one.

Steady reliable goal scorer, but I wouldn't have paid him $7 million a year to stay. May have been the worst defensive forward on the team, and not much for digging pucks out of corners, though that was not really his role, would have like to see him use that size to more advantage. The 65 goals he got over past two years were his best back-to-back years of his careers, maybe due to just being in his prime but many of them were handed to him on a platter by Marner. Great at tips though. Wish him well, but not too well in Philly. I think Andreas Johnsson can take his place, score 20+ and be much better defensively. We'll see I guess. If the saved money can land us Tavares will be well worth it.

I havnt really been following as closely the last year as usual - but, why did they just let him walk again rather than trade/resign?

The man scored 36 goals, who is his replacement supposed to be?

Im not questioning their decision making - im just confused

John Tavares apparently.

I think the consensus is that he isn't the strongest 5 on 5, which really limited his TOI, and you can't pay a guy big money that you only trust on the ice for 14 minutes.

They'll miss him on the PP, but they have so many weapons there now it's pretty nuts. And although the goals go to JVR, I got the feeling that Marner was pretty much just scoring bank shots off JVR's stick at times over the last few years.

Burke's best trade. Schenn for JVR was a steal and we had the best years of JVR's career. I think he declines from here on out.

A lot of time for JVR. Particularly liked the fact he seems to be a major hockey geek. Can see him being a quality pundit or coach when he retires

Roger, that makes sense. I also hadnt considered down the road tying up money in JVR they are likely gonna need for Matthews and friends.

Still though, I hate seeing valuable people go for nothing. I am greedy lol

I liked JVR, sad to see him go.

Trading Komarov for Tavares though... pretty decent. This team is one defenceman away now from being the the best theyve been in quite a long time. My lifetime anyway.

93 and 2002 were good teams.

Well, clearly now the decision not to re-sign him was because they wanted that money for other things. The decision not to trade him at the deadline was controversial at the time with some people thinking they should trade him to get assets back and some people thinking that holding onto him for the playoffs would be good both from a competitive sense and so as not to look like you were giving up on the season.

I still think not trading him(and Bozak) was a bad decision but it's a little hard to be bothered about that today.

I think from an asset management perspective it would've been for the best, but you kind of wonder what it would've done to the belief in management in the room a la St. Louis Blues. I would've totally been ok with one of them going though.

Well, in a way wouldn't that have worked out perfectly? You trade JVR, Bozak and Komarov at the deadline and everyone in the room is all "Doesn't management believe in us?"

Then you don't renew Lamoriello and Dubas comes in and is all "Oh, man, can you believe that guy didn't believe in you? Now let's see what kind of defenseman I can trade for with all this deadline loot!"

Things are off to an unfortunate start for JVR... he'll be out 5-6 weeks with a lower body injury (probably knee).

Nice article on JVR (for those with access):

Living in downtown Toronto, embracing the city and the hockey culture, was transformative.
?I didn?t really know what to expect,? he said. ?I remember (former teammate) Jody Shelley telling me, he said, you?re going to love this. He goes; ?You?re going to absolutely love this. This is going to be something that you?ll look back on very fondly. It?s like basically like you?re playing for the New York Yankees of the NHL.??

Getting there, couldn?t have enjoyed it any more, just with the organization, the fans, the teammates that I had,? van Riemsdyk said.
