The LW is wide open, but the tricky part for Robertson is that he fills the same niche as the RWs do in the top 6: skill winger. So what the Leafs have been looking for in the top 6 are F1 forechecker, boardwork brawn, space creators: Bertuzzi, Knies, McMann. Unfortunately for Robertson, he is too small and stubborn to be good along the boards. He also knows his shot is his calling card, so he shoots it like Jason Blake used to: anywhere and everywhere; at least he doesn't aim for the goalie's crest. This can and did hurt his line when the puck didn't go in, which is naturally the far more frequent result.
So who is the best complement to Robertson, who needs a coach's attention and effort to shelter? Best I can come up with is Robertson-Tavares-Jarnkrok on a 14-15 min line 3 against soft competition, which might still run Tavares ragged with too much subsequent DZ chasing. This would also necessitate an experimental line 2 centred by Domi or Nylander.
I think this might be fun and funny...
3 scoring lines with "line 3" below being a shutdown line that can score. Let's put egos aside and ice lines for the best possible outcome for the team. Spreading these guys out will allow balanced ice times and allow them to play on the PK and PP (Marner/Matthews) without burning them out. We have always had the manpower but the allocation has been garbage.herman said:cabber24 said:He should play with a core 4 forward. Spread the 4 out the entire season and break the mold.

I am not convinced Jankrok has to play the top 9 because he forechecks exponentially better than anyone else. It's not like wingers jump sides to forecheck because their W partner doesn't. Bert is a loss for sure in this capacity but we have to give the noncore 4 more of a shot and not play so top-heavy.herman said:cabber24 said:3 scoring lines with "line 3" below being a shutdown line that can score. I like the premise of a two-way shutdown third line. I don't think this line 3 would work though (who is forechecking?).
Hilarious that anyone thinks Marner is a third liner.Dappleganger said:Robertson-Matthews-Domi
