?I came in last year not knowing I was going to sign and this year it?s a whole different story. I got to prove to the management and coaches that I can make it and maybe play in the NHL. I just want to prove to them I can play. I want to be a definite spot on the Marlies team and be a call up to the NHL. They told me to work hard and you never know what to expect when training camp comes around.?

With foot speed always coming up in conversation?s regarding D?Amigo, slimming down was never a concern for him but heading into this year?s camp, his six foot frame does look different.

?I?m actually smaller,? said D?Amigo when asked if he had bulked up over the summer. ?I was 210lbs kind of trimmed down to 200lbs. Its? what I did this summer and it?s working well for me. I feel in a lot better shape now. Right now I feel good.?

Believing that the goal of prospects camp is to be honest to the players with regards to where they stand, Hughes addressed D?Amigo; what he needs to fix isn?t as much physical as it is mental.

?He?s made some jumps forward and then he?s taken some steps backward and then a few more jumps forward. It?s going to be a process for him,? said Hughes. ?It?s a mental mindset that he has to continue to work on and develop. He?s got skill sets and he?s got to keep working on the mental side of the game; which he is. He needs continued experience.?

...
As for the dream of making it to the NHL, Hughes made it clear,

?He has to work and play and work and play. If he continues to do that he will have a chance.?

I don't expect him to crack the Leafs this year. Probably not even close. But it will be interesting to see how much help he can provide the Marlies at the AHL level. He's definitely got a shot to make some noise there and lay the foundation for more serious NHL consideration.

(credit where credit is due: looks like a decent Leafs blog ..)

I was pretty surprised to read that he was 210lbs at camp last year.

Me too. He also seems a little shorter than the 5'11" in his stats (like we've seen with a number of shorter players)

here's ml.com video of an interview with him

For folks unfamiliar, one can find more videos of him by using the search video option near the upper right hand side.

I expect D'Amigo to crack the Leafs lineup, not now, but someday in the near future.  Size shouldn't matter if he has the talent that will take hm over the top (to make it to the NHL).

First, let me say thank you for nobody taking Sabres4now.  ;D
A friend plays for the Otters and said Sondre Olden has been head and
shoulders above everyone at the rookie camp.  Tall player but is a great skater and
high end talent.  Better than Greg McKeeg.
Although he was drafted by Erie and he is in their camp, will probably end up
with the Marlies.

It was said that Detroit wanted him so Toronto traded LA's pick to leap frog them and get him.  22 pts in 5 tournament games in Tier 1 isn't too shabby considering the next nearest player had less than 1/2 the points.

He is a tall 6'4" - 6'5" skilled center who played in Sweden and wears #13.

Interesting. I never even considered Olden as a potential Marlie. I'd probably prefer to see him dominate the OHL if he can though.

That was my first thought as well.  You don't want to rush a long-term project... and it's a much better situation if he turns out to be too good for the OHL rather than not ready for the AHL.

Yep D'Amigo looked lost in the AHL last year and regained his offensive game once shipped to Junior.

he needs to get bigger. Its a must

I really hope D'Amigo and Frattin can put it all together. We really need for some of our prospects to develop. I'm not sure why, but I've got a good feeling about both of these guys, especially Frattin.

It would be nice if a couple of Leafs prospects actually panned out and had great years.  For once I'd like the Leafs to be that breakout team where other cities look and say "what the, why are the Leafs doing so well, we thought they'd suck!"

Until they get added to every trade proposal out there. See Kadri, Nazim  :P
