Wouldn't be surprised in the least bit if Murdoch had had a hand in this. Murdoch is a vengeful and scavenging media mogul, whose newspapers (apart from News of the World) have been known to ruin reputations. Sunday Times was one, at the time. (Don't know if the Murdoch empire still owns it). I know of my own accord that someone's reputation & character were brought into question on the second page of The Sunday Times. The interview with selected people had produced lies--deliberate misquotations & answers filled when none were given. Confused? I am speaking of an experience I witnessed many years ago, that saw (uninvited) journalists deliberately harangue a European doctor friend of mine and lambasting his truthfulness in the media, as well as asking patients of his questions about their treatment, etc.
Truth is, the patients told me that upon reading the printed newspaper article, the answers were all lies! I know for a fact that they were!

A police spokesman said the death was currently being treated as unexplained, but was not thought to be suspicious.
How could they possibly know that. There was no suicide note. After the autopsy, they still don't know why he died. They have to wait for various toxicology and medical tests. His neighbor reported him unwell a couple of weeks ago but better last week after getting checked out by his doctor.
The fact that this guy was an informant who was still informing the NYT and others details up to a week ago, under those circumstances given what is at stake for Murdoch's media empire, one has to be a little concerned on how a man of his age is suddenly found dead.
Sure there may be nothing sinister going on and he may well have died of natural causes. But I'd certainly hope they'd be a little suspicious and very carefully review what happened to him - which it now appears that they are doing.

Well, outside of the fact that he's dead, my guess is there's little in actual physical evidence or corroborating evidence to actually make it look legitimately suspicious from an investigative point of view. All we have right now is circumstantial evidence, which, while it looks bad, is still pretty weak from a legal standpoint. Basically, outside of his connection to the story the shut down that tabloid rag that will go unnamed, there's nothing else to actually cause the police to be legitimately suspicious (from an official POV, of course).
