Peter Forsberg etc is trying to get the NHL to think about showing games earlier on Saturdays/Sundays in order to increase the interest in Europe. Brian Burke was asked about this, and thought it would be impossible in Canada to show NHL games in Europe during "prime time" (In Europe). He said that he thought it might be do-able in the states though, he also said that the highest priority is their own fans.
Peter said that it was almost impossible for him to follow the NHL when growing up since all the games started so late in Europe.
I do know that there are earlier games in the NHL sometimes, usually during Sundays I think. I understand Peter, but I don't really expect the NHL to change their schedule during weekends just to fit european needs, and I'm not sure what he wants, if he just mean a game or so per weekend, but that's what I think.
At the moment I am unemployed so I still follow the leafs, even if it means getting to bed at 4 am, but once I start working again, this will not be possible. However if it is games during Friday or Saturday I will probably watch, and if it is the playoffs I will definately try to see the important games.
I do think that NHL-interest in Europe has decreased in some sense, it was very high from young people in the mid 90's. But after lockouts, and trouble following NHL on tv, and high ticket prices when the NHL teams come over here, it's different. I'm also a bit worried, since a lot of the people I know follow the KHL more than the NHL, and to be honest it's not a development I want to see.
