Leivo asks to traded, Sosh being showcased?

They're both fringe NHLers, but I'm still a little confused on why the Leafs re-signed Leivo...

Can't say I blame him, the writing is on the wall. There's no place on the team for him, unless the Leafs decide to sell JVR and/or Komarov before the deadline. And even then, maybe Johnsson gets called up ahead of Leivo playing.

Sosh has a goal, an assist, and 7 shots on net in 2 games on the conditioning stint so far.

I almost forgot that he signed an extension for next season just 2.5 months ago.

The extension makes him more tradable and gives whichever team takes him (be it us keeping him or someone else) more time to decide how he fits into their plans.

Leivo might be needed next year with komarov, jvr, soshnikov, and Bozak potentially gone. I think the Leafs might keep him.

I would keep Sosh for Komarov. He plays with the same edge but has more offence. I see Kap as potentially JVR's replacement if we don't resign him and I would use Leivo over Martin, every day.

I'd keep Soshnikov over Leivo. More speed and can play up and down the lineup. Could fill a Hyman role on top 3 lines.

Definitely...I would still dump Martin before Leivo tho.

It seems pretty unlikely that Leivo would ever really be needed. Just having his cap space makes it pretty likely that they could replace him with someone broadly comparable.

As for his trade request, I mean, at some point you'd have to wonder about him if he didn't request a trade.

Babcock's response on the Leivo trade request:

?I couldn?t tell ya. Neither guy has asked me for that, but you can talk to Lou about that if you want,? Babcock said.

?In fairness to Nikita, he hasn?t been healthy one time this year. We couldn?t even play him if we wanted to."

A depth centre and a right-shot defenceman are believed to be on the Leafs? wish list.

Because they're just a couple rentals away from the Cup. I mean getting out of the first round. Or at least making a series of it!

::)

Door 1 (assets that expire before the fall are crossed out):
Leivo for depth C (rental)
Soshnikov for a 4th round pick
JvR ('own rental'...)
Komarov ('own rental'...)
Bozak ('own rental'...)

My wishlist (no expiring assets!):
Leivo playing in middle 6
Soshnikov playing in bottom 6
JvR for a A/B prospect and a 1st/2nd round pick
Bozak for a 3rd/4th round pick
Komarov for a 4th/5th round pick

What's JVR going to get signed at? I heard TJ Oshie is a good comparable at $5.75 x 8 years. I feel Oshie is a lot more dynamic.

JVR has one of the best roles in hockey. Go to the net and stay there and pound in the garbage, do nothing else and he's given top PP minutes and great line mates. Couldn't Levio do that? Levio is similar is weight and height. That through the legs shot... has it ever worked?

I like JVR but not at Oshie numbers. I would like him at a $5M x 4 years... so probably not going to happen.

I've been thinking the same thing. Leivo is reasonably big, decent shot, probably faster than JVR and better (more physical) along the boards. Defensively JVR ain't great, can Leivo be any worse? JVR does have really good hands around the net but he doesn't create much on his own.

The Boston game was a bit of a wake up call for how far the Leafs still have to go. I don't really see this team getting past the first round, so why not trade JVR if a good package is available, and finally give Leivo a chance to show if he is an NHL player.

JvR is 23rd in total goals and goals/game in the NHL over the last five seasons (including the current one). Leivo is similar in size and can't crack an NHL roster.

On top of size bias, the league also has draft position bias.

To be fair, we don't have any evidence outside the fact he can't crack a very deep Leafs' roster.

On the subject of Leivo who's described as a nice person, keeping positive in the face of not playing, and who brings a smile to the rink, he genuinely wishes to remain a Maple Leafs:

Josh is a player who would stand in front of a train for the Toronto Maple Leafs,? Pulver said in a statement. ?Josh was drafted by the Leafs and he wants to be a long-time Leaf. He would love to be in the lineup ?Monday night, and every night thereafter. Having said that, he hasn't been in...
