Leafs sign Max Domi, 1 year/3M

I feel like C depth is still the obvious need but I guess you can go #3 C shopping at the deadline. Otherwise, I think they've beefed up at LW pretty admirably.

Capwise:
Samsonov RFA $3.5
Murray buyout 0.69
Timmins 1.1 traded (or Rafferty)
Muzzin on LTIR
===========================
= 0 cap space beyond the 20 NHLers

No room to call up Holmberg (.8) or Robertson (.8) to replace McMann (.76) who is not waiver exempt

They're squeaky tight to the cap - assuming Samsonov will sign for $3.5

Obviously, there are many other things they can do to get cap room. (ie trade Murray instead of buying him out)

With Bertuzzi & Domi (along with Knies, McMann & J?rnkrok and the core 4), and Klingberg on the back end, they'll have improved scoring from their 3rd line and 2nd PP. They won't be as tight defensively.

Domi could technically line up at 3C, maybe with Knies as a winger. He played centre most of last season. Depends on if they'll finally try to having a  sheltered scoring line there or just keep running a "do-nothing" bottom-6.

Some nice little tidy work done by Treliving.  And I think the team is better today than they were at the season's end.  I'm pleased with how the last couple days have gone.

Locked a bunch of players to very reasonable contracts, bigger names with higher potential upside.

I think he actually played his best hockey at center for that Chicago team last year, putting up some decent points. His playoff with Dallas was promising also.

I read your comment on Knies maybe playing 3rd line, instead of top 6 and I agree. Maybe a Knies- Domi- Jankrok line could work, depends on where Keefe wants Kampf. How's Domi's faceoffs?

He doesn't have much defensive prowess according to scouting reports and his stats and what I recall of him. Doesn't hit or block shots much. Not terrible or great at taking care of the puck. He hounds the puck and steals it more than many. He's winning faceoffs at a respectable rate now 53% last season. He scores about 17 goals in a 82 game season - averaging .64ppg. He has a fight or two per year.

He's a very different player than his father. He is more fixated on offense. If Keefe can have a similar effect on him as he has on a number of the forwards he's coached, he could turn him into a more balanced or well-rounded player which would probably stabilize his career.

If he's centering the 3rd line, he'll help with scoring but his wingers will probably have to help him in the checking department.

What am I missing here? Western Conference played their poopiest goalies against CHI?

Granted it's a highlight reel but yeah his shot looks surprisingly solid for someone with mostly paltry goal totals throughout his career (with the exception of 18/19 of course). A lot of those goals were just beating a NHL goalie clean.

And while I'd have preferred Domi at 3C it will be exciting to see Nylander play with a playmaker for almost the first time in his career, assuming they're wing pairs.

Domi on the rush with Nylander would work.

My assumption, and based on Keefe's penchant for narrative-driven lineups (at times), I see a (former) London Knights, rich Tronna-boys line getting a good run. Domi's speed and rush game can help insulate Tavares, while Marner's defensive effort will insulate Domi and Tavares' defensive shortcomings. Tavares will be able to feast on passing from all wings.

I want Matthews and Marner split so Keefe has no reason to play them 25 min a night in the regular season; keep it at an easy 18-20 min for both top lines.

I'd prefer to see Domi-Nylander and Bertuzzi-Marner with the centres switching whenever things seem dull. Mostly just to keep the two primary playmakers on separate lines. It's not as if Matthews and Nylander don't have playmaking abilities though so you probably can't really go wrong with any combination.

Off the top of my head too I would guess the Bunting-Marner wing duo was more successful than the Bunting-Nylander duo, so my inclination would be to pair the Bunting replacement with Marner.

Let me see if I can make a terribad line up;

Holmberg/McMann-Matthews-Reaves
Knies-Tavares-Jarnkrok
Domi-Kampf-Marner
Bertuzzi-Lafferty-Nylander

and other than Reaves being a borderline skater, it's actually kind of hard to make this bad.
