I sort of lean this way - but with a caveat of maybe not BRAND new. I think I said it elsewhere. I liked the Dubas hiring for the reasoning he was new. But he was a little too new and it took him a while to adapt some of his beliefs. So if we could get someone new who has maybe done a bit of that adapting/maturing.
It's pretty crazy. 3 years later Shanahan is gone, Trevling is gone, Leafs are a mess, and Dubas is taking a team almost everyone predicted would finish at the bottom of the Metro to the playoffs. It's painfully obvious the Shanahan decision to fire Dubas and hire Treliving was the worst decision of his entire presidency. The fact that Shanahan banked on the core-4 for so long, the ultimate downfall of this entire era.
Sunny Mehta would be an interesting name. Analytics guy who was a total outsider to hockey at first. But has now worked for 4 NHL teams over 10+ years including holding the AGM job with the Panthers while they won their two Cups.I sort of lean this way - but with a caveat of maybe not BRAND new. Mehta would be an interesting hire, for sure, and very much in the vein the team should be looking at - up-and-coming AGMs/executives who haven't sat in the big chair but otherwise have NHL experience. Don't go for a "name" or anything like that. Just like with coaches, there are very few GMs in NHL history that have won the Cup with multiple franchises (IIRC, the number there is also 3). Don't look for a resume full of trophies. Find the next guy, not a previous guy.Sunny Mehta would be an interesting name. Analytics guy who was a total outsider to hockey at first. I heard Seravalli on the radio maybe a week or 2 ago saying emphatically that he gives no credit to Dubas for the position that the Pens are in.Dubas is taking a team almost everyone predicted would finish at the bottom of the Metro to the playoffs.
