Jimmy Vesey

Been following the Jimmy Vesey situation over the last few months. Vesey, 22, was drafted by Nashville in the same draft year as Morgan Rielly, and is a highly touted prospect but unsigned. David Poile Predators GM says he can play in the NHL now and has a spot open for him. Preds don't want to lose him. Leafs drafted his brother and his Dad was hired by the Leafs as a part time scout. Hmmmm. Leafs would love to get their hands on the 3rd member of the family. 6'3" and 210 pounds with great speed who plays at Harvard. 74 goals in about 118 games of college hockey as of the middle of Feb. The Crimson are playing RPI this weekend in ECAC playoffs. If they lose the series, it?s possible they might not make it to the NCAA tournament and their season could end, meaning Vesey would be available to be signed this month. What does everyone think our chances might be?

The earliest Jimmy can sign with a team other than the Predators is August 15, 2016.

Obviously it would be great if the Leafs signed him and if he makes it to free agency, I believe the Leafs would be the front runners to land his services.

I'd feel bad for the Preds though. I don't like it when teams can't sign their draft picks. Sign and trade if need be, maybe that will happen.

It will be a trade deal to be fair to the Preds who are a great trading partner of the Leafs.  Sort of like McKegg for Hyman with the Panthers. Just have to let someone of value go for someone who looks like Hyman plus.
Perhaps we have to part with Brown?

No, and there's no reason to be 'fair' here.

The only reason the Preds trade him is if they know they can't sign him. They'd pretty much have no leverage. So, no, the Leafs wouldn't have to part with Brown. Something like a 4th round pick would be more likely - especially if there's a feeling around the league that he wants to end up with the Leafs.

Also, if the Leafs sign Stamkos they should send Marner to Tampa Bay so they don't get their feelings hurt.

Man, I've heard some bad opinions on this site but this is a whole new level.

I think Burke would've done that, actually.
Then again, he wouldn't have drafted Marner.

LOL I agree Nik. The Leafs have been criticized for the drafting of his brother and signing of his Dad. Believed all done to possibly signing Jimmy. He sounds like he is thinking of staying with the Preds from what I've read but he could be just saying that. In any case the Leafs may be able to grab him and for nothing which would be awesome. I think the kid is going to be a very good NHL'er. Has all the tools. Heres hoping we snag him.

Seems something is up with Vesey.

Poile has been making public invites gushing about him and basically saying that he wants him to be part of the playoff run, but he still hasn't signed up.

It would seem to me that Poile knows something is up as well, and is trying to ensure that everyone knows that he wants the kid to be in Nashville tomorrow.

EDIT:  I guess he can't sign until he's done with his season, so never mind.

All that said I do think you have to take his numbers, and how strong a prospect he is with a grain of salt. As a 3rd round pick he's a legitimate prospect and the simple truth is that most legitimate NHL prospects aren't playing in what's essentially a junior league at the age of 22(turning 23 in a couple months). Vesey didn't put up great numbers as a freshman or sophomore so I'm not sure I see anything in his numbers that indicate he's significantly ahead of where he should be based on his draft position. There are a lot of undrafted 20 year olds putting up good numbers in the CHL too.

Like I said, a legitimate prospect but not someone any of us should be overly concerned with. His signing would be a nice bonus.

He can sign whenever, but, as an NCAA player, the second he signs a contract, he's no longer able to play for his university. Based on the article he wrote for the Player's Tribune, finishing his college career with his team is a priority for him. So, it's less that he can't, and more than he won't.

30 Thoughts

16. There?s no question that all eyes are on Harvard's Jimmy Vesey. The Crimson face Boston College on Friday. If they win, it?s a head-to-head matchup versus the winner of Providence/Minnesota-Duluth for a berth in the Frozen Four. A defeat ends Vesey?s college career and forces him to make a decision ? Nashville (and the playoffs) or elsewhere. I don?t profess to know what Vesey is thinking. In his writing and interviews, there?s a bit of Tim Duncan there, in terms of explaining why he wished to stay in college for four years. The Predators are hopeful and, one thing I can tell you, is about 28 other teams are hopeful he chooses them over Toronto. It?s going to be interesting if the choice is the Maple Leafs, because the accusations will fly. Not that Lou Lamoriello will care.

Yes that was perhaps my most stupid non thought out post of all time, or just one of them

Bob McKenzie had a good point - Nashville, being the only NHL team that Vesey can play for this year, could sign
and play him to burn 1 year off the entry level deal. Quicker path to the $$$$.

That's kind of a double-edged sword though. Vesey's ELC will be 2 years whether he signs with the Preds for this season, or with anyone in the summer. If he burns a year now, he'll have to negotiate his next contract off of one season instead of two. He also won't reach UFA until the summer of 2020 regardless, so it doesn't help him out there.

Vesey watch is ON...

Can the Leafs trade for him and let him burn a year off like Nashville offered to do for him?
