The Ivan Hlinka is one of hockey?s hidden gems... true gauge for the best national teams at the level, as all the best players are generally available to play (many are tied up with playoffs in April).

In goal, Canada has a strong crop this year...Daniel Altshuller...Sault Ste. Marie Greyhound Matt Murray.

Francois Tremblay and Dominic Graham are also capable of stealing the show... favorite Canadian under-18 goaltender, Chris Driedger, did not get an invite....think that actually just proves how competitive this position will be for the tournament...

D-men...Matt Dumba of the Red Deer Rebels...Dumba is extremely dynamic and can change the momentum of a game with his stick or body. He?s the kind of player who gets fans on their feet and can intimidate opponents with his presence. ... Niagara IceDog Jesse Graham...

...forward... Hunter Shinkaruk...Shinkaruk is an absolute rink rat and has that love and passion for the game that is truly genuine and exciting....On the ice he?s very intelligent and very slippery with the puck.

Sean Monahan...Monahan is a born winner and plays a style of game that coaches and teammates love. He has multiple gears and always seems to be one of the most noticeable players on the ice when crunch time hits.

...most underrated player in the mix at forward is Brandon Magee.  Magee is a warrior and is potentially the best two-way player in the group.Magee is almost guaranteed to be one of the biggest dark horses/wildcards of the 2012 NHL draft, jump on his bandwagon now because he just doesn?t let you down.

The Ivan Hlinka Tournament....

Led by Woodbridge native, Andreas Athanasiou, who has been compared to a (Taylor) Hall/(Steven) Stamkos/(John)Tavares type,  Team Canada's U-18 squad not only advanced to the Semi-final game against Team Russia on Friday, but has outscored their opponents by a margin of 12-1, during their two straight victories (lone defeat coming at the hands of Team Sweden, 5-1).

The Ivan Hlinka Tournament....

Team Canada's U-18 squad defeated Team Russia 5-0, thus advancing to the Final (championship game) against Team Sweden.  Canada has outscored the opposition in the last 3 games, by a combined total of 17-1!  The opposing teams, by the way, were Czech Republic, Switzerland, and Russia.

Head coach Steve Spott was disappointed with Canada's parade to the penalty box against Sweden, but his players have adapted as the tournament has progressed, defeating the Czech Republic, Switzerland and Russia by a combined 17-1 scoreline.

Seeing as how Canada has won this tournament 16 times in its 21 year history, including 14 of the past 16 years, that's not exactly surprising.

Team Canada downed Team Sweden 4-1, thus winning it's fourth consecutive gold medal.

speaking of future draft eligible players.  I seem to remember Martin Frk being highly touted.  I think he was playing in the Q last  year but being Slovakian (I believe), he may have gone home to better his chances of playing for their World Junior team.  I remember when the games were in Ottawa, being told that they like their team to play together for the season. The Hockey News at one point threw out the name Cam Neely as a comparible

Frk is being seen as a top ten draft pick and yes, the Cam Neely comparison is quite appropriate.  Frk's style of play has been described as "hard-nosed".  He is from the Czech Republic, and will be in his 2nd season with the QMJHL's Halifax Moosehead.
 
I went to the prospects game tonight and it was one of the best CHL games i've seen in a long time. Team Orr, (coached by Mr. Quinn) won with a late goal to break the one > one tie. Mark Recchi was coaching Team Cherry. Fast, hard hitting and great skills were all over the ice. great game indeed.
The place was full of scouts and hockey greats, such as Mark Messier, and many more. Unfortunately there was a thousand empty seats.

Hockey Canada has announced a Canada-Russia Challenge for it's World Junior selection team in lieu of a hockey evaluation camp.

The first of two games will be played in Yaroslavl (Russia), followed by the next two Halifax Aug.13-14 2012.


TSN2 will be showcasing the first game Thursday Aug. 9th /2012 at 11:00am ET.

Too bad Nathan MacKinnon, dubbed the "next Sydney Crosby", and who also happens to hail from Crosby's hometown of Cole Harbour, NS, will not be eligible to participate (underage).

This Challenge is also celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Canada/Russia Summit Series of 1972, as well as paying tribute to the 36 Locomotiv players who died in the plane crash in Yaroslavl last year.

The Ivan Hlinka Memorial tournament featuring eight countries including Canada, will open in Slovakia and the Czech Republic, Aug.13-18, 2012.

Team Canada's under-18 team will be coached by former Maple Leaf Todd Gill, also coach of the OHL's Kingston Frontenacs.

2 separate events. The Canada-Russia challenge is the WJHC summer camp. The Hilinka is an U-18 tournament.

If Canada wins Game 4 of the Challenge at the Metro Centre tonight in regulation, then there will be a 20 minute OT and possibly a SO to determine who wins the challenge. Now that's the part I don't like of all this. What is so wrong about calling it a draw and everyone goes home happy? It's not like this will give either team any advantage at the WJHC in December.
