Amid all the corruption scandals that have plagued soccer's governing body, FIFA, these past weeks, let's hope the Women's World Cup, hosted by Canada, will bring some shine to the beautiful game.

First the NFL, now this:

Spotlight is on Team USA goalkeeper Hope Solo:

It's now a sadly familiar pattern: A major sports organization has a chance to lead, chooses to retreat and ends up making a bad problem worse.

U.S. Soccer was plagued with a distraction on Sunday, one day before its women's national team begins group play in the World Cup here against Australia. An ESPN report detailed disturbing allegations that star goalkeeper Hope Solo verbally abused police officers after a domestic conflict that led to her arrest last year.

Solo's half-sister Teresa Obert went on camera describing her account of the alleged attack, accompanied by photos of scrapes on her neck and a bruise on her face. When asked if U.S. Soccer had asked for her side of the story, Obert said no. And in that moment, Solo's protectors looked nearly as poor as Solo did.

"I was surprised they didn't investigate," Obert told ESPN.

It's another upsetting surprise, another troubling glimpse at Solo's problems and another non-soccer soccer story for a sport that really could use some favorable news.

In all of these situations, it seems teams and leagues don't really want unfavorable accounts. They want to believe their star didn't do anything wrong, or at least didn't do anything worse than what the public is privy to. So they ask a few painless questions and then sweep it all away.

U.S. Soccer failed to talk to all the people involved and then the people involved ended up talking to the media on the eve of its team's first Women's World Cup match.

And Solo could have said she went through a thorough process and an investigation and she feels it's time to start anew. Maybe then last year's news would have truly been last year's news.

So far, games played, teams, and results:

Amid inclement weather In Edmonton Thursday evening, Canada played New Zealand to a scoreless draw.

The Canadians had their scoring chances but couidn't connect hitting crossbars and such.  Canada's lack of scoring may be of concern but the Canadian Women are in first place in Group A.

Next game is Monday against the Netherlands.  A win would clinch top spot, but a loss will bring some complications.

Canada ties the Netherlands to a 1-1 draw and wins Group A.
The draw was a disappointment to many as Canada was expected to win.  But, in the 87th minute, well, the Dutch found their break and goodbye Canada's  potential win.

Still, for Team Canada, they finish well ahead of the others in their group to take the top spot.

Round two awaits.  Opponent unknown.  The mystery of Canada's poor scoring was partially solved in this game.  However, more scoring needs to happen or at least to prevent the opposition from coming back if the Canadians are to have any hope of advancing in the next (elimination) stage.

Let's hope so.

GO CANADA GO!!

Canada beat Switzerland 1-0 to advance to Group of 8.  Good on them.  They really need to find their offensive game though if they want to advance further.

Canada (8th) will play the winner of Norway (11th) vs. England (6th).

A record crowd, the most ever for a soccer match in Canada (men and women's) saw Canada defeat the Swiss Sunday evening.
Attendance at B.C. Place Stadium was listed at 53,000+:

In fact, this year's Women's World Cup may well be on it's way to breaking tournament attendance records (both singular & overall):

Quarter-Final matchups nearly set:

QUARTERFINALS
? June 26 ? Germany vs. France in Montreal at 4:00 pm
? June 26 ? China vs. United States in Ottawa at 7:30 pm

? June 27 ? Australia vs. Japan or the Netherlands in Edmonton at 4:00 pm
? June 27 ? Canada vs. England in Vancouver at 7:30pm

Quarter-Final results:

USA defeated China 1-0, while Germany outlasted France in a shootout 2-1.

While the Americans have had concerns with their scoring, the matchup between Germany and France was a tale between two top Women's soccer nations.  With the ensuing tie came the shootout.
A tough loss for France, indeed.

This sets up the Semi-Final match between USA & Germany.

Canada plays England this evening while Japan & Australia square off.

The winner from the Quarter-Final games will advance to play each other in the Semi-Finals.

Notable:. Canada is the tournament's most yellow-carded team (nation), a testimonial to the Canadians aggressive and gritty play.

british media has been hyping how dirty the canadians play all week. you can book it that we are getting our fair share of call against us tonight for being too rough.  which will be unfortunate because the france germany game was the first one where i saw two teams actually kicking lumps out of eachother.

well we're out. The coach is at fault for ignoring sessleman's struggles in earlier games. taking off scott an aggressive midfielder for a kyle basically allowed england to run the clock down. what a spectacular f up to give the lead to england.

Ouch, that hurt...

... a huge disappointment.  Canada loses 2-1 to England in the Quarter-Finals, falling behind 2-O in the game, attempting to cut the lead (via Christine Sinclair's marker), but by then it was simply too late for the Canadians to mount a oomeback.

Canada's Christine Sinclair did all she could, but it's a fact that some of the Women's game's great scoring stars - - which also includes the USA's Amy Wambangh - - are 'fading'.

Canada accomplished her goal of reaching the Quarter-Finals in this year's event, but Canada's low offensive output and inability to find the net were noteworthy concerns.

A disappointment yes, but to see the interest and the excitement of the crowds, not to mention the attendance at these Women's soccer games, particularly with Ganada playing to a packed B.C. Place Stadium in Vancouver, is certainly something to cheer about.

?I?m proud of [the team],? Sinclair said. ?You look around the stadium tonight and there?s 50-odd thousand people wearing Canada jerseys. Young kids now dream of representing Canada, and we did that. This one stings, but in the grand scheme of things, this tournament was a huge success.?

USA deservedly advances in a tepid soccer game. refereeing was a factor. no red card for a professional foul by the american defender followed by an awarded penalty to america for a foul? committed outside the box. regardless the stat that summed up the game: shots on net by germany = 0

Couldn't quite believe that Germany was that bad in this game.  Shooting wide on their only penalty kick/shot, and plus the zero shots on target.  One could almost say that the Germans were paid to lose.
