F1

So there's a topic on Grosjean's crash but I didn't see a main F1 thread.

I've been watching Drive to Survive a lot lately and I'm honestly shocked at how much I'm enjoying it. To a point where I'm going to get up early tomorrow to watch the Belgian Grand Prix. Any other F1 fans here? Anything you can tell to a noob? [emoji846]

Spa is one of my favourite tracks - and it seems to rain an awful lot here for a race that take place in summer. Because of the track layout and forest it can sometimes be raining on one part of the track but not the others. On that note hope you didn't get up too early as doesn't seem that the race is going to start anytime soon.

Fun fact: most of the focus has been on Michael Schumacher making his debut here 30 years ago, but just as significantly he won his first race here 29 years ago. I guess they're saving that for next year though.

My first attempt at watching an F1 race and it appears to get rained out, and it appears the teams/commentators were confused about the rules for the last hour and a bit [emoji23]

Yeah, bit of a weird afternoon really and it was a pretty unprecedented situation. Can only recall this happening once before in my 29 years watching F1.

Out of interest do you get the UK commentary? They hint that it goes out in other countriesbut not sure in which.

I found a streaming site to watch it but am really considering getting TSN for F1 and various Leafs games - seemed to be the British feed.

I was going to say this must be quite rare or you wouldn't have teams/commentary unsure of what the rules were surrounding rain out and Sergio Perez's car being allowed to enter the race.

I really hoped this was going to be a thread on forechecking and the role of F1 ?
Herman didn't start the thread so no chance of that I'm afraid [emoji23]

Been watching F1 for the last couple years. Drive to Survive helped me get more into it and also gave me a better understanding of the 'haves' and the 'have nots'. It's one of my gripes in the sport.

I didn't get to watch the actual race yesterday. Watched the rain for about 40 minutes before I brought my kid to hockey.

Side Note: If you get an opportunity to go to Montreal for F1(when it comes back), make sure to check it out. It's an amazing weekend. Make sure to be there for qualifying as well which is almost as fun as the race.

I think that actually might be changing going forward.

Anyone watch Monza last week? I caught the replay and Verstappen landed his tire on Hamilton's head. He's definitely lucky to be alive... Wow!

It's shocking the effect a well made show like that can have. I went from someone who has absolutely no interest whatsoever in any sort of motorsport to reading articles about who Aston Martin will be going with next year.

I still don't watch much of the actual racing but I can't wait for the next season.

That halo is certainly a life saver.

I loved F1 in the 80s and even through to the late 90s, so basically from being a kid to a late teen. But I really struggle now with watching the races in full. There's just not enough action and overtaking etc.

F1 is also behind the paywall now on subscription TV whereas it was on BBC every week when i was a kid so you got to develop your favourite drivers - often the British/Irish ones as they got the most coverage being the BBC so we had the great British v German rivalry in Hill v Schumacher.

So I really disliked Schumacher... until he joined Ferrari which is still my favourite car, so Schumacher became a favourite.

I find consuming F1 via Drive to Survive is much better now though, you see more of what's going on behind the scenes, get to know the drivers characters a bit more. It's just a shame it's a season behind, it would be a great way to be involved in an actual season.

I wasn't an avid watcher in the 80's and 90's. I was aware of Schumacher and his main competition but I didn't pay much attention. My real introduction to the sport was live in Montreal. I think the event itself is what drove my interest, but like I said, it was still an interest in passing. Drive to Survive has placed me in a spot, like Nik, where I'm checking the stories out on where drivers are going etc; I also pay attention now to qualifying which I never use to do.

That was an interesting race in Sochi last week. McLaren really should've pushed Lando onto the full wet tires instead of leaving it up to him to decide, but it definitely lead to a wild finish!

Wow what a race & what a season. Controversial first and last lap. That was wild.

Drive to Survive is going to be amazing and they're for sure going to make this into a movie.

I understand Mercedes being upset about the way that ended. I'm not overly upset about it though. Mercedes seems to be the team that always gets the breaks, including Hamilton being allowed to leave the track and increase his lead in the first lap.

I was thinking about that but I also thought Max pushed him off. I'm not sure what Lewis was supposed to do there. But it is odd you can lead most of the race only to lose at the end because of a weird technicality. The race was over for Lewis once Latifi crashed. As well Masi shouldn't be getting influenced by team chiefs. It'd be like GMs calling the war room and arguing against calls and refs changing the call during a game.

I'd say it's more like the head coach arguing penalties with the ref, which happens all the time and can influence them.
