ANA
?John Gibson (7-15-0, 2.96 GAA, .904 Sv%) will likely start for the Ducks
?Anaheim got off to a very surprising 9-6-0 start to the season but have since come crashing back to earth going 4-17-0 after that
?The Ducks will be without the 2nd overall pick in the 2023 draft Leo Carlsson as he went on the IR with a knee injury in late December. Carlsson had a solid 15 points in 23 games prior to his injury

TOR
?Martin Jones (5-3-0, 2.37 GAA, .926 Sv%) will likely start for the Leafs
?All eyes will of course be on the goaltending situation here as it's possible 6'7" rookie Dennis Hildeby could get his first NHL start. Keefe repeated his stance after the LA game that it's possible Jones could get both starts on this back to back depending on how he feels physically though

I hope the Leafs play tonight with the same vim, vigor, and attention to structural detail they did last night (and against Carolina at 5v5). It's a hard way to play consistently unless it's baked into the team mentality long term (see Boston) because it is kind of boring. But you know what's not boring? Winning.

Ya I'm with you on that one Herman. Everyone wants to see the 6-5 games but it's not a recipe for winning in the playoffs. Know what they say though good defence creates offence. Leafs have the talent to still pot the goals when the time comes. You look at Boston on paper and you say "how the f do they keep winning". They are just sound fundamentally, well structured, coached and of course good net minding. Game last night had it's moments but I thought they started to sit back thus kinda boring but if they can play anywhere near how they played the first half going to be a lot of wins. I was impressed with the Matthews line and none had any points so what does that tell you.

I think if they know they're going to have to end up playing the kid (which they will if they don't make a trade), isn't a late game against Anaheim the way to go?  Nobody is going to watch that one.  If he sucks, you put Jones in, and then they don't play again until Saturday.

You go back to Jones for Saturday for the 7pm start game, then pray like hell that Woll gets well soon because they've got a busy January schedule.

Play the kid see what we got. Going to be tough this isn't the AHL but if the Leafs play anywhere near how they defended for the most part of last night he'll be fine. Nerves may come into play can't fault him for that but they say he's a pretty cool cucumber. I say play him and I think they will.

Yeah I don't see how you don't give Hildeby this game. Samsonov isn't going to magically fix his issues in a week or two (if at all) and there's a real possibility Woll misses the entire rest of the month. You're going to need a non-Jones goalie to take a start eventually and like you said the conditions for Hildeby's first start here couldn't really be any better.

I think they're going to play Hildeby but not going to announce it so early as to let the media ramp up the pressure all day. So a lot of downplaying and pooh-poohing about easy travel from LA to Anaheim (um that drive looks like poop) for the external audience, but probably more lock-down and focus conversations internally lauding the team effort in playing David Kampf hockey right in Danault and Dubois' faces.

Playing like this regularly makes the Leafs a bit more goalie-agnostic, which is a salary cap nice-to-have.

Me too. They set the tone early and often by playing a very straightforward North-South, no-muss-no-fuss game. Chip in, chase hard, shoot when open, chase hard again to shoot some more. Everyone else (other than maybe the Domi line who didn't generate much offense) followed suit.

Ya lets see what we have here.

Seems like the ideal time to start Hildeby. An added benefit - given the Leafs tendency to play down to opponents, maybe having a rookie in net will inspire the rest of the team to put in an effort similar to last night. If Jones starts I fear this will be a let down game.

We all want to see Hildeby but I think Jones goes.  If ever there were an easy B2B, this is it.  And Keefe is notorious for not trusting lower-end players / newbies.

Keefe has to and will prioritize winning over anything here.  If they feel Hildeby is ready, he'll play. These guys know a lot more then we do.

Anaheim will have 23-year old backup Lukas Dostal in net. Dostal has a 0.893 Sv% in 15 games this season, and 0.899 Sv% in 38 career games. Could be a battle of two promising young goalies then.

Two 'easy' games coming up (which isn't always the case with this team).

Hildeby should get a start in one of them to get the experience and let them see how he does against NHLers.

Jones spent most of his career in San Jose. I'm sure he still has fans there. My guess would be he'd like to play there.

My guess is Hildeby starting or not is somewhat linked to any progress the team has made towards acquiring another goalie. If they?re not close, he plays. If they feel they are, he probably doesn?t.
