He was a tough one.

I remember 'Dangerous' Dan Maloney not only as a very much feared on-ice player for the Leafs, but also off the ice.

A particular game my (late) brother and I attended at some point in the early '80's when Maloney was the assistant behind the Leafs bench, and a time of woe for the club.

I remember after the game, when we and a bunch of other fans had gone around MLG where the Maple Leaf players usually exited. (Bear in mind that in those days there were no security checks or anything remotely resembling that, no matter how much they talked about security at MLG).  So, poor Rick Vaive could hardly move as fans encircled him wanting autographs galore, all the while a very persistent salesman kept practically stuffing his card up Vaive's nose with Vaive telling him "I'll give you a call" repeatedly.  The whole thing looked a little laughable.

Anyway, in the meantime, out arrives Dan Maloney in accessing his car parked in the area lot.  Some fans shifted their attention towards Maloney's car encircling that too, obviously waiting patiently for him.  His wife had already been sitting in the car and she looked slightly nervous and a little scared, I must admit, as her husband got into his vehicle, attempting to start the car but the car wouldn't start.  An angry Maloney, fuming and cursing to himself and turning beet red in the face, got out of his car and began to sign autographs for us fans.  A nice gentlemanly gesture indeed.

Let me tell you, when someone, especially a male with a reputation for on-ice pugilism and a feared fighter turns red and looks angry, it's enough to send shivers down one's spine.  Imagine how opponents must have felt to see a stone-faced Maloney racing towards them.

Oh well, I just wanted to reminisce a bit and yes, I respected Dan Maloney even as an enforcer because by his own admission, he never went after players who couldn't fight, only onto those whom he felt were deserved of some punishment.

Rest In Peace.

Maloney was the coach of the Leafs right before Brophy if memory serves me well.  Even though the Leafs were bad at that point I still have fond memories of those times as I was a teenager and that was my team.  RIP Dan.

Much too young to go.  Condolences to his family and friends.

Rest in peace Dan.  Thank you for your service to our Leafs.

A devastating article in the Athletic today about Dan Maloney and Terrion as well. Never had a clue he suffered so with alcohol and the effects of brain trauma. It really brought me to tears.
