Now he?s selling off Bjugstad with retained salary for... a conditional 7th.

I'm not sure I get the derision. He's on an expiring deal not anywhere near worth his cap hit which is pretty substantial.. 4.2M or something like that... especially with the flat cap, is it realistic he'd be moved without retention?

Yeah, if anything I don't really understand it from Minnesota's perspective.

I'm guessing the only value here is if he rebounds, they can flip him.

Have a look at Minnesota's roster...brutal:  https://www.capfriendly.com/teams/wild

I always liked Bjugstad; thought he was really going to break out after a couple pretty good years early on in Florida. I think a 7th rounder is worth the risk, really. He's only 28 and has produced quite nicely when healthy. Assuming Pitt is retaining a decent chunk of that 4.1 million, makes sense to me if I'm Minnesota.

I really thought Florida was going to be a force in the Atlantic a few years ago with Barkov-Trocheck-Bjugstad down the middle. So much for that I guess.

I think Minny made out well in this trade though. 50% retained salary (so a $2.05mil AAV) and all they give up is a 7th IF he plays 70 games or scores 35 points.

They need a replacement for Koivu? I think he's costing them 3.2 mill in actual dollars.

Bjugstad never really lived up to the hype, but he?s a solid defensive 3rd line C. Good pick up at a good price, as long they?re not expecting more than that.

This one lands in Carolina?s favour. the UFA rights for a bad player = 5th Rder. Montreal is already paying 4.625M for Karl Alzner to languish in the AHL.

Kind of mad at Dubas for not trading Montreal Ceci?s rights for a 2nd tbh

I don't get this move at all. Was Bergevin thinking there'd be a bidding war for this guy and wanted to get in early?  Makes me hopeful the Leafs can flip Barrie's rights for a pick. I mean why not we're not bringing him back.

I don't really know how bad Edmundson is. Just taking a quick look at ice time, he averaged the most PK time in the playoffs and was 3rd in TOI time. Is he a 4th, 5th, worse? Habs have lots of picks so not a big loss.

If the money is low enough, I could see the Leafs resigning him but it would have to be a really cheap contract.

He?s really good at a) letting opponents get good chances b) dumping the puck at the slightest sign of pressure c) not being where he?s supposed to be to receive passes.

Check out Carolina?s attack/defense with and without Edmunson. Shades of Ben Harpur where you gotta ask, which team are you playing for, bud?

I really hope Montreal signs him.

Thanks for the explanation. Well then this is a bizarre trade then. Hopefully they do sign him to a huge contract!

They have essentially the same (but older model) in Karl Alzner. Maybe they want a nice stay at home safe LD for Weber or Petry to be anchored down by.

Food for thought:

It's been mentioned a few times now about teams setting a lower internal cap. I think if the Leafs truly want to move on from Freddie they should deal him to the Coyotes for Kuemper. Kuemper is signed for 2 more years, 3.5 next season and 5.5 in 21/22, while Freddie is only owed 1 mill in real money for next year. It would benefit both teams if the reports are right that the Yotes want to cut payroll. Yotes would save 2.5 mill in real money and not handcuff their goaltending position and the Leafs would save .5mill in cap space and have a very good goalie locked up for 2 years. Win win.

I wouldn't want him at more than 3m per. He just cannibalizes offense.

I think if they can get him at 3mill, they will and then aim at a shutdown guy to play with Rielly.
