Canada, Mexico, and the U.S. Awarded 2026 World Cup

Before the start of the Russia 2018 World Cup of soccer, FIFA, the sport's governing body, announced the winning bid to host the 2026 World Cup.

The "United 2026" bid, which won out over Morocco, consists of three host nations -- Canada, Mexico, and the United States.  Never before have three countries together hosted a World Cup event.

The 2026 World Cup will be comprised of 48 qualifying countries -- 7 more countries will be added as qualifiers -- up from the traditional 41 nations and more than any other World Cup in history.

The United States will host the bulwark of the games, 60 games out if the total of 80 (which includes the Quarterfinals and onward).
Canada and Mexico will each host 10 games (for a total of 20).

For the ten games to be played in Canada, three Canadian cities will share the duties -- Edmonton, Montr?al and Toronto.  Only Toronto and Montr?al will need upgrades (Olympic Stadium is due for upgrades that will cost in the millions, and Toronto's BMO Field, the home of the Toronto FC of the MLS will need some seating expansion).  Edmonton's Commomwealth Stadium is all but ready.

Three cities in Mexico will also host the 10 games.

An exciting time indeed for the many soccer fans in Canada in particular, since our country has never hosted or co-hosted a Men's World Cup event with the exception of the Women's World Cup which was held in 2015.

It is unclear if Canada, as one of the host nations, will have automatic entry.

Who came up with this idiotic split of games?  They're playing 80 games in total, the U.S. gets 60 and Mexico and Canada get 10 each.  Wouldn't it be a tad more fair if Canada and Mexico each got 15 games and the U.S. 50?  That way with 15 games, each city in Canada could host 5 games.

I know, Zee, but the U.S.  gets to showcase the majority of the games because according to reports, they have inputted more money plus they have the larger stadiums.

At least the way it stands, it's the best of the worst.  :)

I certainly hope so.

I am assuming Canada's infrastructure is in place to host the 10 games? No new stadiums needed?

The current stadiums -- Montr?al's Olympic Stadium needs $ M of upgrades and Toronto's BMO Field needs seating expansion.  As for Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium, it appears to be ready as it is.

Of the three above-mentioned stadiums, Montr?al's is slated for some costly expenditures that will run in the millions.

Maybe we should let USA have it all? We'll probably get the worst match ups and spend millions to host games no one wants to go to. Apparently, BC declined inclusion.

I believe Edmonton will have to rip the turf out and put grass back in for the World Cup.

Such a positive fellow.
